Volleyball Claims Road Win at Kalamazoo;
Women's Golf Places Eighth at North Central Fall Classic

VOLLEYBALL

KALAMAZOO - The top-ranked Calvin volleyball team claimed a four-set win at Kalamazoo Wednesday night, defeating the Hornets by scores of 23-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-16. The Knights are now 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA.

In set one, Kalamazoo took an early 3-2 lead and held the lead for most of the set. Calvin trailed 21-15 before mounting a 7-1 run to tie the score at 22. Calvin was unable to take the lead and an attack error allowed the Hornets to claim the two-point win.

Calvin then began to turn the tables in set two, hitting at a .286 clip to even the match at one. The Knights continued the momentum in sets three and four behind a strong block at the net.

Calvin finished the match with 12 block assists led by senior Stacey Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) who had four block assists while senior Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn HS) and sophomore Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) had three block assists each.

Junior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had 16 kills and 14 digs while sophomore Kelly Bos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a career-high 10 kills along with a .333 hitting percentage.

Danhoff and Crowe added eight kills apiece. Danhoff also tallied a career-high six service aces in the match.

Senior libero Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) had 14 digs and a pair of service aces.

In her first match as a starter, freshman setter Megan VanSolkema (Escondido, CA/Escondido Calvin Christian HS) tallied 40 assists to go with five digs.

Calvin will now prepare to compete in the Wittenberg Fall Classic this weekend. Calvin will face ninth-ranked Wittenberg on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and will then meet 10th-ranked Washington University of St. Louis at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Calvin will meet Ohio Northern and Otterbein.

WOMEN'S GOLF

NAPERVILLE, IL - The Calvin women's golf team competed at the North Central Fall Classic on Tuesday and finished eighth in a field of 11 teams with a team score of 370.

Carthage took first place in the competition with a score of 316 with Hope second at 317.

Calvin was paced by junior Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) with a round of 88 while junior Shara Reynolds (Big Rapids/Big Rapids HS) had a 92.

Freshman Emily Short (Caledonia/Caledonia HS) had a round of 94, junior Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) a 96 and junior Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) a 96.

McKenize Parks of Carthage was the tournament medalist after winning a playoff. She fired a round of 77.

Calvin is back in action on September 17 when it competes at the Aquinas Invitational at the Scott Lake Golf Club.
