MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Elmhurst 0
By Mark DeHaan
The Calvin men's soccer team completed its weekend in the greater Chicago area on Saturday night as it played the Blue Jays of Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois.
Looking to rebound from a tough 3-2 loss against Wheaton on Friday night, the Knights played strong team defense en route to a 1-0 win against the Blue Jays, marking the first time this season that Calvin has held an opponent without a goal.
Elmhurst applied pressure to Calvin's defense early. Junior goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulus made a pair of saves in the opening 15 minutes to keep the Blue Jays out of the goal.
Despite a quiet half offensively, the Knights got on the board in the 44th minute. Senior Travis Vegter opened up his scoring account for the 2014 season, collecting a rebound and finding the bottom corner of the net as Calvin took a 1-0 lead, which it took into the break.
The Knights held an 8-6 shots advantage in the first half. Each team had one corner in the opening period.
Early in the second half, Calvin forced the Elmhurst keeper into three saves in the opening ten minutes.
In the 70th minute, Elmhurst saw its best opportunity of the game with a two-on-one opportunity against Giantsopolous but a good step by the Knights keeper interrupted the chance and kept Calvin ahead by a goal.
The Knights defense then locked down for the remaining 20 minutes, holding the Blue Jays to a single shot as Calvin earned a hard-fought 1-0 win.
The Knights outshot Elmhurst 17-9 for the game while also holding a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Giantsopolous made four saves in net to earn the clean sheet for Calvin.
The Knights, now 2-2 on the season, are scheduled to play one more non-conference matchup before starting MIAA play. Next Saturday, Calvin will travel to Howell, MI to face the Cougars of Cleary University, members of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
