The Calvin women's volleyball team opened up the conference portion of its schedule on Tuesday night against visiting Albion College. The Knights came in with a 4-0 record while the Britons were 0-4.

In a sweep, the Knights defeated Albion 25-6, 25-15, 25-16.

In the first set, Calvin jumped out to a 7-0 lead including two service aces from freshman Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, IL/Timothy Christian HS). After two straight points from the Britons, a 9-1 run put the set firmly in the Knights favor. Calvin then went on a 9-3 run, including three kills from sophomore Laura Danhoff, to close out the set 25-6.

In set two, the Knights again started strong to take a 6-1 lead. The second set was much more back and forth than set one, but Calvin slowly pulled away, and on a kill by senior Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA/Chowchilla HS), earned the second set win by a 25-15 score.

The final set saw Albion stick with the Knights early. The Britons took a 10-9 lead over Calvin early, but an 8-0 run with Danhoff serving put the Knights ahead 17-10. Albion trimmed the lead to five a few points later, but that is as close as the Britons would come as Calvin claimed the third and final set, 25-16.

The Knights hit .362 as a team while holding the Britons to a hitting percentage of -.033. Calvin also held a 60-37 advantage in digs.

Individually, junior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) led the Knights with 14 kills and added eight digs while Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) had 10 kills. Senior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) led the team with 15 digs while Lodewyk dished out 41 assists.

"We are really concentrating on just getting better as a team. We have some pretty key positions that were trying to replace, so we're really not worried about who we're playing, we're just trying to get better as we go," said head coach Amber Warners. "Getting good competition early is really good for us, because then we know where we're at. Trine is looking really good this year, so going into their place will be difficult, and playing Coe and Illinois Wesleyan will be two tough matches as well."

The Knights improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA with the win while Albion falls to 0-5 and 0-1 in conference play.

Calvin now looks forward to Friday when it travels to Angola, Indiana, to face Trine University at 6:30 p.m. The Knights are also scheduled to play Coe College and Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday.
