In an important conference matchup between two teams tied for second place, the Knights hosted the Britons of Albion College, entering the days contest with 3-1 records.

Calvin jumped out to a 5-0 lead midway through the first half, and despite a strong second half push from Albion, earned a 15-11 victory.

The Knights got on the board first as junior Karissa Reed scored on a free position attempt just under three minutes into the contest.

Junior Lissa Busscher then scored on a pass from Reed, and senior Michelle Holwerda added a goal with 19:48 to go in the first.

Freshman Emily Cefaratti then scored two goals less than a minute apart, and the Knights held a 5-0 lead with 14:46 remaining.

The Britons then scored their first goal of the game, a goal which was quickly answered by freshman Audrey Grabowski.

Two more goals from Albion and three goals from the Knights then brought the score to 9-3 at halftime.

Out of the break, the Britons made a 6-3 run to begin the second half and cut the Knights lead to 12-9 with 6:37 remaining the game.

The Knights then closed out the win with three goals in the remaining time, while the defense clamped down and allowed only one, and Calvin claimed a 15-11 victory.

The Knights outshot the Britons 30-27. Albion had 34 ground balls compared to 31 for Calvin.
Grabowski led the Knights with 4 goals while Holwerda added three goals and three assists and Cefaratti three goals. Reed chipped in two goals and two assists. Senior goalie Lauren Spoelstra made 10 saves on 21 shots.

For Albion, Kadie Koolwick had four goals while Alyssa Glenn and Ashley Glenn each added a pair.

"It was a good win for us, I knew we had to come out strong. I've been saying all season that this game is won in the middle of the field," said head coach Blake Boehm. "Our strong first half was due to our pressing the cage, transitioning well, and not being content with a slower paced game."

The Knights improve to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the MIAA, while Albion falls to 6-6 and 3-2 in conference.

Calvin's next matchup welcomes the Belles of Saint Mary's to Zuidema Field on Tuesday afternoon. That contest is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
