CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 8, 2014
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 18, Olivet 10
OLIVET - Calvin improved to 5-4 on the year and to 2-1 in league play with an 18-10 conference victory at Olivet Tuesday night.
Calvin led 9-5 at halftime and then outscored the host Comets by the same margin in the second half.
The Knights were led in scoring by junior Karissa Reed (Greenville/Greenville HS) with five goals while freshman Audrey Grabowski (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids HS) had four. Junior Nikita Blaauwendraat (Princeport, Nova Scotia/Cobequid Educational Centre) had three goals as did senior Michelle Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Junior Paige Noordyke (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also scored for the Knights.
Senior Lauren Spoelstra (Oakdale, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) had four saves in goal for the Knights.
Calvin held a 35-30 shots at goal advantage. The Knights were also credited with 20 ground balls led by Reed who scooped up nine.
Calvin is set to return to action on Saturday when it hosts Trine University at 4:30 p.m.
MEN'S GOLF
ADA - The Calvin men's golf team took third place in a field of five teams at the Furniture City Classic as the Knights recorded a team score of 317 strokes. Hope captured the tournament title with a team score of 295 with Grand Rapids Community College second at 302, Aquinas fourth at 336 and Davenport fifth at 350.
Calvin was led by junior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) and senior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with rounds of 78 that tied them for seventh place individually. Senior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) had a 79, senior Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) an 82 and sophomore Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) an 85 to round out Calvin's finishers.
Ben Lanting of Hope captured medalist honors on Tuesday with a round of 69.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the MIAA's first NCAA III spring qualifying tournament. Calvin will host the tournament at the Watermark Country Club.
BASEBALL
Cornerstone 14, Calvin 5
Calvin dropped a 14-5 non-conference decision to East Beltline rival Cornerstone University Tuesday night at De Witt Field.
Cornerstone (14-14) used 16-hit attack including a nine-run second inning to pull away for the win.
Trailing 9-0, Calvin (11-10) struck back with five runs in the top of the fourth inning as sophomore Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) ripped a two-run RBI single while sophomore Travis Kraai (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a run-scoring double.
Calvin was blanked the rest of the way however as the Knights managed just three hits over the final five innings while the Golden Eagles tacked on five more insurance runs.
Junior Jeremy Kamp (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) took the loss. Junior Ben Guilfoyle (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield East HS), senior Louis Hill Jr., senior Jack Jorgenson (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) and freshman Pat Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) all saw time in relief.
Kraai and junior Peter Cupery (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had two hits apiece.
Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Albion for a conference doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m.
MEN'S TENNIS
Trine 5, Calvin 4

The Calvin men's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to the visiting Thunder of Trine University Saturday afternoon on the courts of the Strikwerda Tennis Center.
Calvin started out strong, winning second and third doubles to take a 2-1 lead early in the contest.
The Knights then lost four out of the six singles flights to take the loss, 5-4.
In second singles, sophomore Klass Walhout (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) dropped a hard-fought match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The two singles victories for the Knights were in fourth and fifth singles. Junior Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) recovered from being down a set to take fourth singles 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Senior John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also recovered, winning his fifth singles match 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
"We did what we needed to do in doubles," said coach John Ross. "Trine came out and played really consistent tennis. I've never seen a team play as consistently as they did. We just didn't match up to them."
With the loss, the Knights drop to 4-6 on the year, 0-2 in the MIAA.
The Knights return to action tomorrow, when they will travel to Alma to take on the Scots in a conference match.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced its Athletes of the Week in track and field through April 6. In women's track and field, Calvin's Hilary Banning has been selected as the MIAA Field Athlete of the Week.
Banning, a senior from Whitinsville, Mass. (Whitinsville Christian HS) was named women's Field Athlete of the Week for the second straight week after winning the triple jump (34 feet, 9-1/2 inches) and the long jump (16 feet, 5-3/4 inches) in leading the Knights to an 86-68 dual meet victory over Hope. Banning is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the second time in her career.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Alma College.
