Women's Tennis Opens MIAA Schedule With Home Win Over Alma;
Baseball at Kalamazoo Postponed

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 7, Alma 2

The Calvin women's tennis team opened its 2014 MIAA campaign in winning fashion, defeating the visiting Alma Scots 7-2 inside Calvin's Huizenga Tennis and Track Center Tuesday afternoon.

A year ago, Calvin (3-7 overall, 1-0 MIAA) dropped a 6-3 decision to Alma but on Tuesday, Calvin got out of the gates strong by claiming two of the three doubles points.

Senior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and freshman Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas HS) combined for an 8-1 win at two doubles while freshman Liz Turner (Audobon, PA/Delaware County Christian HS) and junior Courtney Selvius (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) came up winners by an 8-3 count at three doubles.

Calvin then slammed the door shut by claiming victories in five of the six singles matches. Junior Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) came up with a 6-1, 6-4 win at one singles, freshman Claire Spoelhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was a 6-2, 7-5 winner at two singles, Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) a 6-2, 6-1 winner at three singles, Benzel a 6-2, 6-3 winner at four singles and Turner a 7-5, 6-4 winner at five singles.

Selvius nearly pulled out a win at six singles before falling 6-0, 3-6, 10-7.

"It was a good way to start our league season," said Calvin womens' tennis coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "Last year Alma got the better of us and our team was determined to get off to a quick start and they did. Grabbing the early momentum was key."

Calvin will now prepare to host Albion on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
