Softball Splits at Trinity Christian College;
Grant Van Putten Receives MIAA Position Player of the Week Honors in Baseball

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL - The Calvin women's softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Trinity Christian College Monday afternoon, taking the opener 5-0 before dropping the nightcap 3-0.

In game one, Calvin (9-5) broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Calvin's sixth inning rally was fueled by a hit, a walk and an error.

The seventh inning surge was highlighted by back-to-back solo home runs by senior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) and junior Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).

Sophomore catcher Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) had her best day of the year at the plate in the win, going 3-for-3 while Cok was 2-for-3.

Freshman Cassidy Vlot (Chowchilla, CA/Chowchilla HS) was stellar in the circle, striking out eight without a walk while scattering five hits. Vlot is now 5-2 on the year with a 0.84 earned run average.

In game two, The Trolls (6-6) scored single runs in the first, second and fifth while limiting Calvin to just three hits.

Calvin's hits came from Avila, senior Janelle Agren (Cadillac/Cadillac HS) and junior Kelsey Pollock (Greenville/Belding HS).

Senior Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 4-3 on the year.

Calvin will now prepare for its MIAA opener on Wednesday as it travels to Adrian for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.

BASEBALL

ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin outfielder Grant Van Putten its Position Player of the Week in baseball for games played through March 30.
Van Putten, a junior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), hit .538 (14-for-26), including five doubles and a home run, scored 10 runs and stole five bases for the week.
He went 2-for-5 with a home run and double and scored four runs in an 18-10 victory over Elmhurst, Ill., and went 2-for-2 with four runs scored in a 15-1 MIAA victory over Kalamazoo. Van Putten is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Calvin is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when it travels to Kalamazoo on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. game.
