Track and Field Teams Open Outdoor Campaigns at Rhodes Invite;
Baseball Set for Morning Twinbill vs Kalamazoo in Florida

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

MEMPHIS, TN - The Calvin men's track and field team opened up its its outdoor campaign at the Rhodes College Invitational. Competing in a field of 15 teams, Calvin took fourth with 89 points.

Calvin gained the bulk of its points in the field events and distance races.

In the field events, sophomore Eric Jipping (Canton/Plymouth Christian HS) won the shot put with a throw of 50-8 3/4 while senior Ben de Waal Malefyt (Midland Park, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) captured the discus with a mammoth throw of 158-5 that will put him high on the early national leader board in the event.

Sophomore David Dadzie (Accra, Ghana/Ghana International School) took second in the javelin (155-3).

In the distance events, junior Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) led the way with a first place time of 9:40.13 while sophomore Andre Otte (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was third (9:59.77) and freshman Nathan VanHaitsma (Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) was fourth (10:05.03).

In the mile run, senior Stephen Tubergen (Mount Prospect, IL/John Hersey HS) was third (4:22.38) while freshman Andrew Woznick was fourth (4:24.65).

In the 5,000 meters, senior Philip Spitzer (Kingsley/Buckley HS) was part of a strong Calvin contingent, taking second (15:25.24) while sophomore Ethan Anderson (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area HS) was third (15:30.40) and junior Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) fourth (15:33.52).

Calvin will now train for a week in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The Knights will compete at the Gulf Shores Invite on Friday afternoon.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

MEMPHIS, TN - The Calvin women's track and field team opened up its its outdoor campaign at the Rhodes College Invitational. Competing in a field of 16 teams, Calvin took sixth with 54 points.

In the 5,000 meters, junior Sarah Danner (Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS) took first with a sizzling time of 17:36.02 while junior Kate Ardinger (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) was third in 18:26.61.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Calvin racked up a slew of points as junior Paige McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) was second (11:25.38), junior Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) fourth (11:29.55), senior Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan/Home Schooled) fifth (11:31.15) and sophomore McKenzie Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) sixth (11:47.55).

In the javelin, senior Lauren Madden (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) took first place with a throw of 115-8.

Calvin will now train for a week in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The Knights will compete at the Gulf Shores Invite on Friday afternoon.

BASEBALL

Calvin will play a pair of conference games on Monday in Florida against Kalamazoo College. The twinbill will begin at 9 a.m. The original start time had been set to begin at 11 a.m. but with approaching storms set to hit the Orlando area later in the afternoon, first pitch is now scheduled for 9 a.m.
