DANVILLE, KY - The Calvin baseball team escaped the frozen wonder winterland of West Michigan and officially opened its 2014 season in the less frigid climate of Kentucky Friday afternoon and evening. Calvin opened the day with a 7-3 loss to Defiance College of Ohio but came back to defeat the host Colonels of Centre 6-1 in an evening matchup.

GAME ONE - Defiance 7, Calvin 3

Defiance broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh and added two unearned runs in the eighth to pull away for the win.

Defiance took a 2-0 lead off of starter Peter Cupery (Holland/Holland Christian HS) but the Knights tied the game 2-2 as senior Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) delivered an RBI single and Cupery followed by driving in a run on a fielder's choice.
The teams traded runs in the fifth. Calvin scored when junior Grant Van Putten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) led off with a single, stole second base and later scored on an error.

Van Putten went 3-for-4 with a triple while sophomore Michael Kamp (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had a pair of hits including a double.

Cupery went the first four innings followed by one inning of relief by junior Jeremy Kamp and four innings by senior Cory Laster (Ludington/Ludington HS). Laster struck out six but took the hard-luck loss in defeat.

GAME TWO - Calvin 6, Centre 1

Calvin collected 10 hits off of three Centre pitchers to gain its first victory of the year. Peter Cupery went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double while Grant Van Putten went 2-for-5 with a stolen base. Senior Jack Jorgenson (Milwaukee, IL/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) also had two hits in the victory.

On the mound, junior Nate Schepers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) tossed hitless ball into the fifth before the Colonels scored their lone run of the game on a triple and a groundout.

Schepers went six innings to pick up the win, striking out six and allowing only two hits. Senior Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS) came on in relief and pitched three innings of shutout relief.
