Rookus Named MIAA Women's Most Valuable Swimmer - One of Five on All-MIAA Team;
Seven Members of Calvin Men's Swimming and Diving Team Named to All-MIAA Squad;
Track and Field Teams Compete at GVSU Tuneup Invite / Women's Tennis Falls to Wheaton
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Five members of the Calvin women's swimming and diving team have received All-MIAA accolades led by sophomore Michaela Rookus who has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Swimmer. Rookus is the sixth individual in Calvin women's swimming history to be named the league's Most Valuable Swimmer, joining Katie Nagelkirk (2002 & 2003), Rebekah Weima (2004-2007), Emily Roberts (2009), Maggie Vail (2010) and Elizabeth Counsell (2011). Calvin's Erica Deur (2006-2009) and Samantha Klaasen (2011-2013) have also received MIAA Most Valuable Diver honors from Calvin.
Joining Rookus on the All-MIAA women's swimming and diving team from Calvin are sophomore Sarah Roth and juniors Lexi Scott, Erika Waugh and Kathryn Wrobel.
Following are bios of the All-MIAA honorees from Calvin:
MICHAELA ROOKUS - (HUDSONVILLE/HUDSONVILLE HS) - Rookus is making her second consecutive appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships, she was a three-time event champion, winning the 200 IM (2:07.62), 100 breaststroke (1:05.31) and 100 freestyle (52.00). She was also a part of Calvin's MIAA championship 400 medley relay team that clocked in with a time of 1:46.66.
SARAH ROTH - (BRIGHTON/BRIGHTON HS) - Roth is making her second straight appearance on the All-MIAA team. A diver, Roth placed second on the three-meter diving board (432.80) and seventh on the one-metet board (342.65). She has already qualified for the upcoming NCAA III Diving Regional at Denison University next weekend.
LEXI SCOTTT - (RICHMOND, IN/RICHMOND HS) - Scott is making her first appearance on the All-MIAA team. She was a key point producer for Calvin last weekend at the MIAA Championships. She placed second in the 200 IM (2:09.11), third in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.16) and second in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.28). She was also a part of Calvin's 400 medley relay team that was second in 3:52.90.
ERIKA WAUGH - (BERNE, IN/SOUTH ADAMS HS) - Waugh is making her third consecutive appearance on the All-MIAA team. Waugh had a record-breaking weekend at the MIAA Championships last weekend, winning the 200 backstroke in an MIAA and school record time of 2:03.49. She also placed second in the 100 backstroke (57.85). Earlier in the meet as the leadoff leg of Calvin's 400 medley relay team, she set a new Calvin record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.44. She also placed fourth in the 200 IM (2:10.00) and swam the leadoff leg of Calvin's MIAA championship 800 freestyle relay team, clocking an opening split of 1:55.07. She also led off Calvin's MIAA championship 200 medley relay team.
KATHRYN WROBEL - (ARDEN HILLS, MN/MOUNDS VIEW HS) - Wrobel is also making her third consecutive appearance on the All-MIAA team. She was also a key point producer last weekend at the MIAA Championships, placing fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:11.10), second in the 200 freestlyle (1:56.13) and third in the 1,650 freestyle (17:42.40). She also swam on Calvin's first place 800 freestyle relay team as well as on its first place 200 medley relay team and second place 400 freestyle relay team.
This past weekend at the MIAA Championships, the Calvin women's team captured its 10th consecutive MIAA title, taking first place at the MIAA Championships with a team score of 805 points. Calvin's current championship streak matches the longest conference championship streak in MIAA women's swimming and diving history.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
A record seven members of the Calvin men's swimming and diving team have received All-MIAA honors. Those seven individuals are senior Andrew Mitchell, junior Travis Vincent, sophomores Johnson Cochran, Caleb Meindertsma, Aaron Venema and freshmen Dirk Tanis and Brett Stoughton.
ANDREW MITCHELL - (IRON MOUNTAIN/KINGSFORD HS) - Mitchell is making his second appearance on the All-MIAA team. Last weekend at the MIAA Championships, Mitchell captured the league title in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.74. He also led off Calvin's MIAA Champion 800 freestyle relay team that clocked an MIAA and school record time of 6:45.68. Mitchell led off the relay with a school record time of 1:40.08 in the 200 freestyle. He also placed fourth in the 50 freestyle (21.07), took third in the 200 backstroke in a school record time of 1:53.64, anchored Calvin's first place 200 medley relay team (1:32.14) and led off Calvin's first place 400 medley relay team (3:21.96). Both medley relay teams set new school marks in taking first place.
TRAVIS VINCENT (NOVI/NOVI HS) - Vincent is making his third consecutive appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships, he took first place in the 200 IM (1:53.64), placed third in the 400 IM (4:07.18) and third in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.74). He was also a part of Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team that took second (3:01.10).
JOHNSON COCHRAN - (MOUNT VERNON OH/MOUNT VERNON HS) - Cochran is making his second consecutive appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships last weekend, he captured titles in the 100 breaststroke (55.73) and 200 breaststroke. His time of 55.67 in the prelims in the 100 breaststroke was a new school record while his winning time of 2:03.19 in the 200 breaststroke was also a new school mark. He also took seventh in the 200 IM (1:56.33) and was a part of Calvin's MIAA champion 200 and 400 medley relay teams.
CALEB MEINDERTSMA - (ANNANDALE, VA/TRINITY CHRISTIAN HS) - Meindertsma is also making his second consecutive appearance on the All-MIAA team. Meindertsma put together a record-setting weekend at the MIAA Championships last weekend, winning the 400 IM in a school record time of 4:01.45 while also winning the 1,650 freestyle in a school record time of 15:58.55. While swimming the 1,650, he also established a new Calvin record in the 1,000 freestyle, compiling an opening 1,000 split of 9:38.97. In addition, he was second in the 500 freestyle (4:35.59) and swam a leg on Calvin's first place 800 freestyle relay team.
AARON VENEMA - (GRAND HAVEN/GRAND HAVEN HS) - Venema is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships, he established a school record time of 4:34.00 in winning the 500 freestyle. He also captured first place in the 200 freestyle (1:41.48) and was second in the 1,650 freestyle (16:19.81) while swimming a leg on Calvin's first place and record setting 800 freestyle relay team. He was also a part of Calvin's second place 400 freestyle relay team.
DIRK TANIS - (HOLLAND/HOLLAND CHRISTIAN HS - Tanis is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. A diver, he placed fourth on the three-meter board (321.25) and third on the one-meter board (399.40).
BRETT STOUGHTON - (CENTERVILLE, IN/CENTERVILLE HS) - Stoughton is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. At the MIAA Championships, Stoughton was a two-time individual event champion, winning the 100 butterfly (50.15) and 200 butterfly (1:53.70). He was also second in the 200 IM (1:54.48) and was a part of Calvin's first place 200 and 400 medley relays.
Last weekend, Calvin made school history, winning its first-ever MIAA title in men's swimming and diving, recording a first place score of 795 points, finishing more than 125 points ahead of second place Hope College.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ALLENDALE - The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Grand Valley State Tuneup Invitational on Friday. Both teams had a number of strong performances.
MEN'S RECAP
Sophomore Eric Jipping led the charge with a career-best throw of 51-8 1/4 in the shot put that was good for fourth place, surpassing his previous mark by more than a foot. The throw begins to put Jipping into consideration for the national list in the event.
Junior Erik Holstege also had a big day,taking sixth in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.67 while also tossing a big throw of 41-8 in the shot put. Holstege will attempt to put his multi-events to work again next Friday and Saturday when he competes in the heptathlon inside Calvin's Huizenga Tennis and Track Center at the Calvin Championships.
Other notables included freshman Andrew Woznick turning in a time of 1:57.96 in the 800 meters, senior David Vande Bunte clocking a career-best time of 4:17.86 in the mile run and junior Josh Ferguson taking fifth (8:35.91) and senior Gabe Gunnink taking sixth (8:38.64) in the 3,000 meter run.
WOMEN'S RECAP
On the women's side, senior Julie Busscher had a strong showing in the 200 meters, taking sixth in a season-best time of 26.04 while junior Kelley Tuinenga had a season-best time of 1:00.88 in the 400 meters.
In the 3,000 meters, junior Kate Ardinger was fifth (10:35.64) while junior Kimby Penning was sixth (10:37.19). In the 5,000 meters, junior Sarah Danner had a big night, winning with a time of 18:02.98 while senior Alyssa Oram had a strong third place time of 18:31.65.
Senior Hilary Banning was fourth in the triple jump (34-3) while freshman Bethany Van Eck was fifth in the long jump (15-5 1/2) and eighth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.82).
Both Calvin teams will now prepare for the Calvin Championships next Friday and Saturday at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Wheaton 9, Calvin 0
WHEATON, IL - The Calvin women's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to Wheaton College of Illinois on Friday night. Calvin is now 1-1 on the year and will take on Coe College of Iowa on Saturday afternoon.
