Volleyball Team to be Honored February 8 With Celebration Event Inside Van Noord Arena;
Calvin Winter Sports Athletes Receive MIAA Player of the Week Honors

VOLLEYBALL

A special program to honor Calvin's 2013 NCAA III Volleyball champions will take place on Saturday, February 8 inside Van Noord Arena. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a desert reception followed by the main event program at 7:30 p.m.

The public is invited to attend with ticket prices listed as $10.00 for adults, $6.00 for students and individuals ages 5-18.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin's Kathryn Wrobel its MIAA Women's Athlete of the Week in swimming and diving for meets through January 18. Wrobel, a junior from Arden Hills, Minn. (Mounds View HS), won three freestyle events in leading Calvin to a 193-105 MIAA dual meet victory over Kalamazoo.

She won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.28, the 500 freestyle in 5:12.70 and the 1,000 freestyle in 10:37.68. Wrobel is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career. Wrobel is part of a Calvin women's swimming and diving team that is currently ranked 15th nationally. The Knights will head to rival Hope on Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual meet.

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin's Aaron Venema its Men's Athlete of the Week in swimming and diving for meets through January 18.

Venema, a sophomore from Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS), won two individual events and swam on a winning relay in leading Calvin to a 175-122 MIAA dual meet victory over Kalamazoo, the Knights' first win over the Hornets since 2006. He won the 200-yard freesetyle in 1:44.98 and the 500 freestyle in 4:46.10, and swam a :48.30 split in helping Calvin win the 400 freestyle relay.

Venema is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career. Venema is part of a Calvin men's team that is currently ranked 13th nationally.

The Knights will travel to rival Hope on Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual meet.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Tyler Kruis its Player of the Week in men's basketball for games played through January 18.

Kruis, a senior from Grand Rapids (Grandville Calvin Christian HS), averaged 22.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots in leading the Knights to a pair of MIAA victories. He scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds in just 22 minutes of action in a 78-54 victory over Adrian, then scored a career-high 27 points on 12-of-15 shooting from the field, and collected seven boards in a 90-72 win over Kalamazoo.

Kruis, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and third time in his career, shot 74 percent from the field (20 of 27) for the week.

Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Trine at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena
