Women's Soccer Players Receive NSCAA All-Central Region Honors;
Calvin Swim Coach Previews Calvin Winter Invitational;
Calvin Hockey Coach Named to Lead European Selects Team Over Christmas Break

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Three members of the Calvin women's soccer team have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Continental Tire Division III All-Central Region second team. Named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire Division III All-Central Region second team are senior Danielle Carter and sophomores Paige Capel and Taylor Ten Harmsel.

A center midfielder from DeWitt (DeWitt HS), Carter is receiving all-region honors for the second straight year as she was a third team selection in 2012. During the season, Carter scored four goals and added two assists for a total of 10 points. She scored game-winning goals against Adrian and Olivet and was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week once as well as to the All-MIAA first team. She concluded her career with totals of 19 goals and 10 assists.

A striker, Capel hails from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. During the 2013 season, she tallied a team-leading 16 goals along with six assists for 38 points. Of her 16 goals, six were game-winners including a game-winner in an early October match at Hope and a sudden-death golden goal in the second overtime of a 1-0 first round NCAA III Tournament triumph over Aurora University. She was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week once during the year and was selected to the All-MIAA first team.

A midfielder, Ten Harmsel is from Holland and is a graduate of Holland Christian High School. She tallied 10 goals and seven assists for 27 points this year. She scored game-winning goals in conference victories over Saint Mary's and Hope. Her goal in a November 4 match against Hope proved to be the only goal of the game and allowed Calvin to clinch its second consecutive outright MIAA regular season title. Ten Harmsel was also named to the 2013 All-MIAA first team.

Under the direction of head coach Mark Recker, Calvin finished the year with an overall record of 19-3-2 and captured the MIAA regular season title with a league mark of 13-2-1. The Knights then captured the MIAA Tournament crown with tournament wins over Adrian and Hope and then advanced to the second round of the NCAA III Tournament before bowing to top-ranked Washington University of St. Louis. Calvin's 19 wins were the second highest single-season total in Calvin women's soccer history.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Calvin mens' and women's swimming and diving teams will host the Calvin Winter Invitational this weekend, welcoming teams from around the state and Midwest. The Calvin sports information office caught up with head Calvin swim coach Dan Gelderloos to preview the upcoming Calvin Winter Invitational while also looking back on the season thus far as well as looking ahead.

The Calvin Winter Invitational will begin on Thursday night at 6 p.m. with prelims on Friday set for 10 a.m. and evening finals slated for 6 p.m. The 10 a.m./6 p.m. schedule will also hold on Saturday. All competition will take place inside Calvin's Venema Aquatic Center.

HOCKEY

The ACHA D3 Selects' Program is proud to announce the coaching staff for Division 3's third bi-annual trip to Europe over Christmas break. Mike Petrusma, head coach of the Calvin College Knights, has been selected as the head coach of the 2014-15 Select's trip. Mike previously served as an assistant under Sean Weaver during the second Select's trip in 2012-13 who went 5-0 on their trip. The rest of the coaching staff is still being selected and will be announced soon.
Mike Petrusma is currently in his 18th season at Calvin College and is an active leader in the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference and the ACHA Division 3. His coaching record includes over 360 wins, one national championship (2004) and 3 other 3rd place finishes. Mike has built a consistent program at a Calvin College that regularly qualifies for regionals in the North Region. He was given the coach of the year award in the MCHC in 2006. The MCHC hosted the D3 nationals in Holland, MI in 2011 at which Mike was one of the key league representatives on site. Mike also traveled to the 2013 D3 nationals in Springfield, MO to assist the D3 commissioner on site and even provided some color commentary for a few of the game broadcasts.
Coach Petrusma was born in St. Thomas, Ontario and played hockey in the Georgetown area. Mike began coaching at Grand Rapids Christian after moving to West Michigan. He also spent two seasons coaching at Grand Valley State University before moving over to Calvin College. Coach Petrusma took a break from college hockey to return to Grand Rapids Christian and he led them to two City League titles and one regional championship (the 1st regional championship in school history). Mike eventually returned to coach the Calvin Knights in 2002.
Mike lives in the Grand Rapids area with his wife Kristin. He has two married sons, Josh and his wife Michelle and Michael and his wife Amanda. Mike's first grandson was born recently to Michael and Amanda and is named Atlas. Coach Petrusma owns his own custom wood finishes shop that keeps him very busy when he is not the rink.
In addition to the coaching staff, the Select's program has asked Chris Van Timmeren (Hope College/Former Select's Head Coach), Sean Weaver (Central Florida/Former Select's Head Coach) and Division 3 Vice-president Scott Solomon to assist with the selection of the team. They will be evaluating players during the 10 team All-Star tournament later this year.
