Basketball Teams Pick Up Road Wins at Manchester;
Calvin Takes Early Lead in MIAA Commissioner's Cup Standings
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 65, Manchester 55
MANCHESTER, IN - The Calvin women's basketball team got back on the winning track with a 65-55 victory at Manchester University Tuesday night. The win lifts Calvin's season record to 3-2.
Calvin held a 39-31 halftime lead and used a 12-5 run over the final three minutes of regulation to seal the win.
Calvin led throughout the second half with Manchester closing to within two points on one occasion and then with three points at 53-50 late in the contest before the Knights pulled away for the win.
Junior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) led Calvin with 15 points including three baskets from beyond the three-point arc. Junior Maria DeKuiper (Bradenton, FL/Bradenton Christian HS) had 13 points while junior Hannah Acre (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had 11 points. Junior Kayla Engelhard (Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) added 10 points to round out a balanced Calvin scoring attack. Sophomore Abby Springer (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills HS) also chipped in with eight points including a pair of three-pointers.
Manchester (1-3) was led in scoring by Alyssa Hammond with 11 points.
"It was a good road win for our team," said Calvin women's basketball coach John Ross. "This was our fifth game in 11 days so we are running a little ragged right now but I was proud of our effort."
Calvin shot 44.9 percent overall from the field and connected on 15-of-17 attempts from the free throw line for an 88.2 percent clip.
Calvin will now break until December 4 when it hosts Albion at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
MENS BASKETBALL
Calvin 78, Manchester 50
MANCHESTER, IN - The 11th-ranked Calvin men's basketball team rolled to a 78-50 victory at Manchester University Tuesday night to improve to 4-0 on the young season.
After trailing 20-18 early, Calvin put on a 21-8 scoring run to grab a 39-28 halftime advantage.
Calvin then held Manchester to 22 second half points while continuing to shoot at a 50 percent clip to put the game away.
Junior guard Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) led Calvin with 17 points including four three-pointers. Brink connected on three consecutive triples midway through the second half that allowed the Knights to build a 17-point lead. Brink was part of a solid back-court combo as sophomore guard Jordan Daley (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Inside, Calvin featured the combo of senior Tyler Kruis (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) and junior Tyler Dykstra (Holland/Holland Christian HS) as Kruis had 11 points and two blocks while Dykstra had 13 points and four boards. Senior Mickey DeVries (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) was also stellar with eight points and eight rebounds.
As a team, Calvin racked up 20 assists while turning the ball over only four times. Sophomore point guard Austin Parks (Niles/Niles HS) had a team-high five assists.
"I thought we came out focused and ready to play tonight," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "To hold a pretty good scoring team like Manchester to 50 points was a solid effort by our guys. Offensively we did a good job of sharing the ball. Our ball distribution has been good all year so far so that's a good thing."
Calvin held a 37-22 rebounding advantage and finished the game with a 51.7 percent field goal clip. Calvin was also 12-of-25 from three-point range with six different players connecting on at least one three-point field goal.
Manchester (1-5) hit 11-of-24 three-point field goals but just 3-of-12 in the second half. Blake Brouwer led Manchester in scoring with 14 points while Jarod Schrock had 10.
Calvin will now prepare to host the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament Friday and Saturday at Van Noord Arena. Friday games will see Hope facing Aquinas at 6 p.m. and Calvin facing Cornerstone at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, Hope will meet Cornerstone at 6 p.m. and Calvin will face Aquinas at 8 p.m.
Tickets for each day are $10.00 and will be available at the door each night.
MIAA NEWS
Another successful fall sports season has allowed Calvin to build an early lead in the first set of MIAA Commissioner's Cup standings released earlier today. Through the fall sports season, Calvin holds a one-point lead over rival Hope with 99 points overall. Adrian is third with 50 points followed by Alma with 49 points. In the MIAA women's all-sports standings, Calvin also leads with 59 points followed by Hope with 49 points. In the MIAA men's all-sports standings, Hope leads with 49 points followed by Calvin with 40 points.
This fall, Calvin captured five MIAA titles, winning outright titles in men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country and a co-title in volleyball. Calvin also picked up a second place finish in men's golf and a third place finish in women's golf.
The MIAA Commissioner's Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league's 20 sports for men and women.
The final Commissioner's Cup standings is determined on the basis of each college's standings in eight of ten sports for men and eight of ten sports for women. All eight fall sports are tabulated in this tabulation.
Calvin won the 2012-13 Commissioner's Cup.
The Commissioner's Cup (All-Sports Award) has been presented since 1934-35. Hope has won the award 34 times, followed by Kalamazoo 15, Albion 14, Calvin 9 & Alma 5.
