Men's Basketball Picked to Repeat as MIAA Champions in Preseason Poll;
Calvin Soccer Players Receive Capital One Academic All-District Honors;
Calvin Fall Sports Teams Crack NCAA III Regional Rankings;
Calvin/Hope Hockey Set for Weekend Series

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The MIAA preseason men's basketball coaches' poll has been released and rivals Calvin and Hope have been picked to finish first and second respectively.

Defending MIAA champion Calvin received six of a possible seven first place votes while Hope received two first place votes.

Adrian was picked to finish third followed by Trine in fourth.

A year ago, Calvin finished 26-4 overall and on top of the MIAA standings with a 13-1 conference mark.

Calvin returns three starters and nine letterwinners from last year's team.

Combined, Calvin or Hope have won at least a share of 54 of the last 58 MIAA men's basketball titles.

The two rivals are scheduled to meet on January 11 at Calvin's Van Noord Arena and on February 5 at Hope.

MEN'S SOCCER

Calvin College junior Travis Vegter has received yet another honor. Vegter has been named to the Division III Capital One Academic All-District team in men's soccer. He is now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration. Calvin is a member of District 6 which includes the states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Vegter is a biology major. He was a member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll a year ago.
Vegter is in the midst of a sensational junior soccer campaign as he has scored 24 goals along with three assists for a total of 51 points. His goal total is the second-highest single-season total in Calvin men's soccer history.

He was recently named the Division III National Player of the Week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

He has helped the Calvin men's soccer team post an overall record of 11-5-0 and move into first place in the MIAA standings with a 10-2-0 record.

2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District(r) Men's and Women's Soccer Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Calvin senior Ashton Hearn has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District team in women's soccer. Hearn is now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration. Calvin is a member of District 6 which includes the states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

A native of Port Huron and a graduate of Port Huron Northern High School, Hearn is now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration.

A goalkeeper, Hearn has fashioned a won-loss record of 13-2-2 this fall along with a goals-against-average of 0.74. She has five shutouts to her career this fall. Hearn has 28 career shutouts and an overall won-loss record of 48-12-5.

She has helped the Calvin women's soccer team move into a share of first place in the MIAA standings with a 11-2-1 conference mark and an overall record of 14-2-2. The Knights are currently ranked 25th in the most recent Division III Top 25 poll conducted by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Hearn is a speech pathology major at Calvin and has been a regular member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and Calvin Dean's List.

MORE SOCCER AND VOLLEYBALL

The Calvin men's and women's soccer teams as well as the Calvin women's volleyball team are in the latest set of NCAA Division III regional rankings.

Calvin's soccer teams compete in the NCAA III Central Region. The Calvin men's team is ranked sixth in this week's regional poll. The Calvin women's team is ranked fifth in its regional poll.

In volleyball, Calvin is once again ranked second in the Great Lakes Regional poll, one spot behind Hope.

The NCAA III regional rankings are used to determine seeding and selection for the upcoming NCAA III Tournament competition.

ACHA ICE HOCKEY

The Calvin ACHA ice hockey team is off to a tremendous start to its 2013-14 season. Under the direction of head coach Mike Petrusma, the team is currently 9-1-1 overall and ranked third nationally. On Friday, the Knights will host fifth-ranked Hope to begin a home-and-away weekend series.

Friday's game at Eagles Ice Center is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Tickets still remain at the Calvin Box Office (www.calvin.edu/box<http://www.calvin.edu/box>).
