CALVIN KNIGHT SATURDAY SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT. 12, 2013

WOMEN'S GOLF

BATTLE CREEK - For the third consecutive year, the Calvin women's golf team is headed to the MIAA Spring Tournament. Calvin finished fourth at the two-day, 36-hole MIAA Fall Tournament on Saturday but also placed third in the final league standings - its highest regular season league finish in school history.

Calvin posted a two-day team total of 679 strokes at the weekend tournament, hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley country Club. Calvin shot 341 on Friday and came back with a score of 338 on Saturday to finish three strokes behind Trine over the weekend. The Knights did finish 27 strokes ahead of Trine in the overall MIAA fall standings however.

Olivet took first at the weekend tournament and also won the MIAA regular season title. Saint Mary's took second at the tournament and second in the final league standings. The MIAA Spring Tournament determines the MIAA's automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament. As regular season champion, Olivet will host the final two rounds of the spring tournament with Saint Mary's hosting the first 18-hole round.

With a weekend total of 679, the Knights finish the MIAA fall season with a season team scoring average of 344.0 per round, just one stroke behind the school-record pace set by Calvin's 2012 team.

Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) capped off her fall season in style, sharing weekend medalist honors with a two-day total of 152 (73-79) to tie Olivet's Adrienne Plourde for first place at the tournament. Canto finished second in the final MIAA individual standings with a season average of 78.5 strokes-per-round. The average is a new Calvin single-season record. For her efforts, Canto earned a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year.

Calvin also landed two players on the All-MIAA second team as sophomores Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) and Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) were so honored. Harkema had a weekend total of 180 (95-85) and finished tied for 12th in the final MIAA individual standings (86.7). Poole also tied for 12th (86.7) and shot a weekend total of 170 (85-85).

GRAND RAPIDS- The top-ranked Knights beat the University of Chicago in the final match for the Midwest Challenge on Saturday to remain the only undefeated team in Division III; Calvin sweeping Chicago with scores of 25-11, 25-12, 25-16. This was the only match for Chicago that did not last five sets.

The Knights played with enthusiasm against a Chicago team that could not quite keep up. Chicago, ranked 15th in the nation, showed glimpses of greatness but in the end the ruthless attack of the Knights proved too much to handle. The Knights hit .341 overall with .500 in the second and .467 in the third.

Sophomore Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL; Chicago Christian) led all players with 15 kills and added 6 digs with a .517 hitting percentage with no errors. Juniors Emily Crowe (Granger, IN; Mishawaka Penn) and Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA; Chowchilla) both had 6 kills. Senior Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids; Grand Rapids Christian) lead all players with 20 digs Jamie Kooiman (Eugene, OR; South Eugene) and Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL; Timothy Christian) both had 9 digs, Biesboer added 3 service aces. Senior Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids, MI; Grand Rapids Christian) led all players with 29 assists and tacked on 4 kills and 4 digs.

Calvin opened the day with an impressive 25-14, 25-16, 25-19 victory over sixth-ranked Elmhurst College. A year ago at the same tournament, the Bluejays handed Calvin one of its three losses on the season.

Calvin received 14 kills in the win from Maggie Kamp while Ellie Diepersloot had nine kills and Emily Crowe and Megan Rietema six kills apiece. Rietema added 29 assists and seven digs while Maggie Kamp and freshman Laura Danhoff each had one block solo and three block assists.

Calvin completed the weekend with a 4-0 record, defeating four nationally-ranked teams along the way.

Head coach Amber Warners had only good things to say about her team's play over the weekend saying, "We got into a mindset of playing one point at a time. We started forgetting about previous plays, not worrying about the plays ahead of us and really playing in the moment. Moving forward we are going to take a lot of confidence from this weekend." When asked who stood out during this tournament she responded, "No one in particular stood out; just great play from the whole team all week is what really made the difference."

The Knights will return to action on Tuesday, October 15 against MIAA opponent Trine at home in the Van Noord Arena, that match will take place at 6:30 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 5, Albion 2

ALBION - Calvin remained on top of the MIAA standings with a 5-2 victory at Albion Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now 7-4-0 overall and more importantly 6-1-0 at the halfway mark of the MIAA regular season. Calvin remains three points ahead of rival Hope heading into a rivalry showdown next Tuesday at Hope's Van Andel Stadium with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.

Calvin trailed early 1-0 but tied the game at one on a goal by junior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) late in the first half with freshman David Waterson (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) drawing an assist on the play.

Calvin took a 2-1 lead with just five seconds left in the first half as junior Sean Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) slammed home a feed from Vegter,

Albion tied the game 2-2 with a goal in the 62nd minute but the Knights responded with three unanswered goals in the final 16 minutes of play. Junior Reed Bowden (Uxbridge, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) put the Knights up 3-2 in the 74th minute on pass from senior Zach Willis (Wyoming/Unity Christian HS).

Vegter then scored his team-leading 15th goal of the game on yet another pass from Waterson with this goal coming in the 81st minute. Sophomore Sam Hanover (St. Johns/St. Johns HS) completed the scoring with a goal with 17 seconds left in regulation.

Junior Andrew Claucherty (Sterling Heights/Bisoph Foley HS) had five saves in goal for Calvin. The Knights outshot Albion 19-7.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Calvin women's soccer hosted the Thunder of Trine on Saturday afternoon. The 18th ranked Knights entered the contest at 7-1-1 in the MIAA and atop the conference while Trine came in at 1-8-0 in league play. Calvin defeated the Thunder earlier this season 4-0 at Trine.

On Saturday, Calvin again downed the Thunder, earning a 3-1 win.

The Knights opened up the scoring in the 18th minute. Off of a Trine goal kick, senior Heidi Scholten collected the ball and sent sophomore Paige Capel through the Thunder defense on a run, which set her up one-on-one with the keeper. Taking one touch forward, Capel slipped the ball past the Trine keeper, giving Calvin a 1-0 lead.

In the 41st minute, Scholten scored a goal of her own, taking a pass from sophomore Jenna Bouwer in the middle of the box and finding the back of the net.

The Knights took the 2-0 lead into halftime, as well as an 11-0 shots advantage.

In the second half, Calvin didn't waste any time adding an insurance goal. Just 30 seconds in, senior Paige Rindels hit a curling shot from the top of the box toward the far post that caught far netting for a 3-0 Knights advantage.

Trine responded in the 75th minute as Skylar Reed broke through the Calvin defense and hit the back of the net, cutting the Knights lead to 3-1.

The Thunder would not get any closer, however, as Calvin's defense shut down the Trine offense the remainder of the game as the Knights claimed a 3-1 victory.

Calvin outshot Trine 24-2 in the contest while also holding a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

"Coming off two very large wins in a row, I think it's a good lesson that there has to be a focused effort every time we come out on the field," said head coach Mark Recker. "It behooves us to take one game at a time rather than look at what we want at the end (of the season). When we can keep that our focus, I think we can bring more of our presence to each game, so I think that is what will be our focus as the rest of the season unfolds."

Calvin moves to 11-1-1 and 8-1-1 in conference with the win, while Trine falls to 2-10-0 overall and 1-9-0 in the MIAA.

The Knights now look forward to a tough non-conference contest against the #1 Thunder of Wheaton College when they travel to Wheaton on Tuesday evening. Calvin's game against the Thunder is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CST).
