By Mark DeHaan

Coming off a 4-0 win over Kalamazoo this past Saturday, the Knights women's soccer team tried to keep its offense rolling Wednesday against the visiting Comets of Olivet. After a scoreless opening 20 minutes to the contest, Calvin did just that, receiving six goals from five different players to earn a 6-0 victory.

Senior Danielle Carter scored Calvin's first goal in the 22nd minute, receiving a pass from sophomore Paige Capel at the top of the box and ripping it into the back of the net.

In the 36th minute, sophomore Christina Drost tapped in a pass from freshman Allie Corp on a nice run behind the Olivet back line to give Calvin a 2-0 lead.

The Knights added two more goals before the end of the half, one in the 41st minute from senior Heidi Scholten off a cross from senior Paige Rindels and the second from sophomore Jenna Bouwer off a dump off from Corp.

Calvin held a 15-1 shots advantage at halftime despite being called offsides nine times in the opening period.

In the second half, senior Kelly Koets scored a pair of goals, twice slipping behind the Comets defense to go one-on-one with the Olivet keeper and finish both times.

With a 6-0 lead, Calvin held strong on defense and only allowed four total shots, keeping Olivet off the scoreboard and earning the 6-0 victory.

The Knights held a 24-4 shots advantage by game's end as well as a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior keeper Ashton Hearn and freshman goalie Emily Lawson split time in net to combine for the clean sheet.

"I think when we started the game we weren't efficient like we could have been - we missed a couple of golden opportunities," said head coach Mark Recker. "I think you saw the support players really take some ownership. To have our supporting cast come in and put three on the board was huge for us, and huge for their confidence. We were able to rest players in anticipation of a big game (on Saturday), and the more we can have rest for our players earlier in the season, that means our legs will be more present later in the season, and I think that is important."

With the win, Calvin moves to 8-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the MIAA while the Comets drop to 5-5-0 overall and 2-5-0 in conference play.

The Knights now look forward to an important away game at Hope on Saturday to complete the first half of their conference schedule. The game will be played at Van Andel Soccer Stadium and is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
