MEN'S SOCCER
Ohio Wesleyan 2, Calvin 1
DELAWARE, OH - The Calvin men's soccer team was forced to swallow a bitter pill on Friday evening as the Knights dropped a 2-1 decision to nationally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan. The game was part of a season-opening tournament hosted by Ohio Wesleyan.
Calvin took a 1-0 lead on a goal by junior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in the 57th minute of play but the 21st-ranked Battling Bishops scored a pair of goals in the final 12 minutes of regulation to pull out the win.
Both teams had strong chances to score in the first half but could not break through. Calvin was particularly strong in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
In the 57th minute, Vegter broke free up the right wing and beat Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper Colin Beemiller with a shot from in close.
Ohio Wesleyan knotted the score at one in the 79th minute of play as Jon Stegner collected a chip into the box and blasted a shot into the top shelf. With just under seven minutes to play, Ohio Wesleyan's Taylor Rieger collected a well-placed cross and ripped a shot over the head of Calvin goalkeeper Andrew Claucherty (Sterling Heights/Bishop Foley) for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
Ohio Wesleyan concluded the game with a 24-11 shots at goal advantage including 15-4 in the second half. Claucherty had three saves for Calvin while Beemiller had seven saves for Ohio Wesleyan.
Calvin will face Kenyon College on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Ohio Wesleyan's Roy Rike Field.
