Calvin Cross Country/Track and Field Athletes Receive Capital One Academic All-District Honors
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD
Four members of the Calvin men's and women's cross country and track and field teams have received Division III Capital One Academic All-District honors. Seniors Dan Kerr, Greg Whittle and Job Christiansen have been named to the All-District 6 team on the men's side while junior Nicole Michmerhuizen has been selected to the All-District 6 team on the women's side.
As members of the all-district teams, all four individuals advance to the national ballot and are eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration.
A native of Petoskey and a graduate of Petoskey High School, Kerr was an exercise science major at Calvin and will attend graduate school at Wake Forest University next fall. At Calvin he carried a 3.74 grade point average and was a regular member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and the Calvin Dean's List. He is making his second straight appearance on the Capital One Academic All-District team.
Last week at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, he claimed All-America honors in the 10,000 meters for the second straight year, placing third. In 2012, he was an NCAA III All-American in the 10K with a fifth place finish. In 2011, Kerr claimed an All-America plaque at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships, placing 21st individually. This past cross country season, Kerr was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner for the second straight year and earned a spot on the All-MIAA team for the third straight year. He later placed second at the Great Lakes Regional meet and 46th at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships.
Whittle is from Galesburg, Illinois. He is a graduate of Galesburg High School. A civil and environmental engineering major, Whittle carries a 3.69 grade point average. He has also been a regular member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and Calvin Dean's List. He is making his second straight appearance on the Capital One Academic All-District team.
Whittle is a three-time NCAA III track and field All-American, placing second in the mile run at the 2011 NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships and fourth in the 1,500 meters at the 2011 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. This past weekend, he claimed All-America honors once again in the 1,500 meters, placing fifth at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Whittle also qualified in the mile run for the 2012 Indoor Track and Field Championships as well as the 1,500 meters at the 2012 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In 2011 and 2013, Whittle was the MIAA champion in the 1,500 meters and earned a spot on the All-MIAA team.
He has also made a mark on the cross country course, earning Great Lakes All-Region honors this past fall for the second straight year, finishing 26th at the Great Lakes Regional meet. He then ran on Calvin's cross country team at nationals that finished second.
Christiansen is from New Ipswich, New Hampshire. He is a graduate of Mascenic Regional High School. This past fall, Christiansen had a breakout season in cross country, claiming NCAA III All-America honors with a 35th place finish at the national meet, helping Calvin finish second as a team. He also took third at the MIAA Cross Country Championships and sixth at the NCAA III Great Lakes Regional meet to earn first team All-MIAA and Great Lakes All-Region honors for the second straight year. At the MIAA Field Day in track and field earlier this month, he placed third in the 5,000 meters.
A history major at Calvin, Christiansen carried a 3.71 grade point average and will attend graduate school at Kent State University next fall. He is receiving Capital One Academic All-District honors for the first time.
On the women's side, Michermhuizen hails from Holland and is a graduate of Holland Christian High School. She holds a double-major of chemical engineering and biochemistry while maintaining a grade point average of 3.99. She is receiving Capital One Academic All-District honors for the second straight year.
Earlier this spring, she was named the recipient of a prestigious Goldwater Research Scholarship.The Goldwater Scholarship is the premiere undergraduate award of its type in the field of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The program was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in those areas.
Last weekend, Michmerhuizen completed a sensational track and field campaign, capturing the national title in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 35:45.08.
Earlier in the spring, she established a new school record in the 10K with a time of 34:09.96 which ranks as the seventh-fastest time in NCAA III women's track and field history. For her efforts, she was named the USTFCCCA Division III National Runner of the week. She was the 2013 MIAA champion in the 5,000 meters and landed a spot on the All-MIAA team for the second straight year. In March, she qualified for the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships and claimed a national runner-up spot in the 5,000 meters.
During the cross country season, she was the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner and later earned Great Lakes All-Region honors, placing fifth at the Great Lakes Regional meet.
