CALVIN KNIGHT SATURDAY SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 27, 2013

MEN'S GOLF
By Mitch Blankespoor

CASCADE, MI - The Calvin men’s golf team captured the MIAA NCAA Spring
Qualifier Sat. afternoon. The tournament consisted of three rounds, two of
which were played at Watermark Country Club. The Knights finished with a three
round score of 956, five strokes better than second place finisher Adrian.
Coming into the final round, Calvin had an eight-stroke lead on second place
Trine. The Knights shot a team score of 323 on the afternoon, good for third
place.

Calvin struggled as a team for most of the day, but did just enough to gain
the MIAA’s automatic qualification into the national tournament. Despite the
tough conditions, senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) shot
the low round of the day (76) and was named the medalist of the round. Senior
Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore James Van Noord
(Troy/Troy Athens) finished in a tie for fifth place with rounds of 79 apiece.

“We were a little disappointed with our scores today, but we are happy to move
on and have the opportunity to play at nationals,” said Calvin head coach Brian
Bolt. “The MIAA has been tough all year long. Many of the teams are very
close. We are honored to represent the MIAA this May.”

Calvin earns its second trip to the national tournament in the last three
seasons. The Knights will play for a national championship in Destin, Fla.,
from May 17-21.

The Calvin women's lacrosse team hosted the Comets of Olivet on Saturday
afternoon, which also happened to be Calvin's final regular season game and
senior day for the Knights. The first senior class of women's varsity lacrosse

Spoelstra. The Knights were able to win on senior day, building a 4-0 lead by
halftime en route to a 10-1 victory.

Freshman Sierra Slaughter scored the first two goals of the game for the
Knights, both unassisted. Junior Christina Howell added a goal with 13:56
remaining to extend the Calvin lead to 3-0. Yelena Davis scored less than a
minute and a half later to bring the score to 4-0, which the teams brought into
halftime.

Out of the break, Calvin scored four more goals before the Comets tallied
their first, with sophomore Nikita Blaauwendraat, junior Michelle Holwerda,
Perragaux, and freshman Carolyn Forbes each finding the back of the net to push
the Knights advantage to 8-0.
Geri Merrell then score for Olivet to bring the score to 8-1.

Calvin then rounded out the scoring as sophomore Lissa Busscher and Perragaux
scored to bring the final score to 10-1.

Slaughter led the Knights with two goals and an assist. Perragux chipped in
two goals while Holwerda added one goal and an assist. In goal, Lauren
Spoelstra made five saves to earn the win.
Geri Merrell scored the lone goal for the Comets.

“Our seniors played well today, and that was an added benefit, for them to
come out on senior day and play the way they did,” said head coach Blake Boehm.
“We've been saying all year that it is about winning the 50-50 balls and
winning the middle of the field, and we came out and did that today.”

The win ends the inaugural Calvin women's lacrosse varsity season. Calvin's
final record is 4-12 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA, tied for fourth in
conference. Olivet drops to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in conference.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Olivet 20, Calvin 7
By Mark DeHaan

The Knights hosted Olivet at Zuidema Field on Saturday for each team's final
MIAA contest. Unfortunately for Calvin, Olivet opened the game with an 8-0 run
and the Knights could not recover as the Comets coasted to a 20-7 victory.

The Knights were held scoreless over the first quarter of the game, with
Olivet building a 6-0 lead by the first quarter break.

After two Comet goals early in the second, freshman DJ VanderBaan struck first
for Calvin, scoring a goal with 11:15 remaining in the period to bring the
score to 8-1.
After another pair of Olivet goals, VanderBaan scored his second of the match
and junior Tim Marco added another as the game headed into halftime with the
Comets ahead 10-3.

VanderBaan then scored his third goal of the contest to open up the scoring in
the second half to cut the Olivet lead to 10-4.

The Comets responded with three more goals before junior Casey Harless cut
into the Olivet lead, now eight at 13-5.

The Comets then scored five straight goals to put the game out of reach midway
through the fourth quarter before junior Jonathon VanderLaan and VanderBaan
scored back-to-back goals to bring the score to 18-7.

Olivet scored the final two goals of the match to round out the scoring at
20-7.

VanderBaan led the Knights on offense with four goals while Tim Marco scored a
goal and added two assists.

For Olivet, Jack Ranson and Cameron Bazin each scored five while James Collins
and Dakota Badder chipped in three apiece.

“It took us a while for us to adjust, and they lit it up on us to come out,”
said head coach Joel Kamstra. “We made those adjustments on the defensive side
of the field mostly, coming into the second quarter and we played them pretty
even. I think Greg (Boer) and Casey (Harless) played well at the draws for us.
We had probably the longest offensive possessions we've had all season long,
guys are seeing that it's really helpful to slow the ball down, work it around
and get into our sets. Obviously not the outcome we wanted, but we'll rest up
tomorrow and get ready to take it to Elmhurst on Monday with Senior Day.”

With the loss, Calvin drops to 2-12 and 1-5 in the MIAA while Olivet is now
9-7 overall and 2-4 in conference.

The Knights now look forward to the final game of their regular season Monday
night. Calvin will host Elmhurst in a non-conference matchup, with the game
scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
