WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 5, Saint Mary's 4
By Mitch Blankespoor

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Calvin women’s tennis team kept its MIAA Tournament
hopes alive Wed. afternoon with a thrilling 5-4 come from behind victory over
the Belles of Saint Mary’s College. Calvin finishes its regular season with a
6-10 record and a 4-4 mark in MIAA play.

The Belles won the top two doubles flights, and took a 2-1 lead into singles
play. Mary Catherine Faller (Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame Academy) and Kayle
Sexton (South Bend, IN/St. Joseph) defeated the Calvin first doubles team of
junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) and sophomore Megan Visser
(Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) 8-4. Calvin seniors Elise Doezema (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian)
dropped an 8-6 decision at second doubles to Audrey Kiefer (Hinsdale,
IL/Fenwick) and Shannon Elliott (Plymouth, IN/Plymouth HS).
Calvin’s lone victory in doubles came at the third doubles flights.
Sophomores Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) and Samantha Reitsma (Grand
Rapids/Northpointe Christian) defeated Jackie Kjolhede (Novi/Northville) and
Katie Nickol (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) 8-6.

The first singles flight to finish was second singles. Sexton defeated Ipema
6-2, 6-2. The Knights trailed 3-1, and needed to win four of the five
remaining singles flights to win the match.

Third singles finished next. Roode defeated Elloitt in straight sets by
scores of 6-3, 6-0. Zoerhof tied the match at 3-3 shortly after with a 6-4,
6-1 victory over Keifer at fourth singles. Doezema pushed the Belles to the
brink of defeat with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Nickol at fifth singles.

The match-clinching flight was first singles. Visser pulled out a three set
victory over Faller by scores of 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.

Calvin needs a Kalamazoo win over Saint Mary’s Sat. to earn the fourth and
final seed in the MIAA Tournament. If the Belles defeat the Hornets, Saint
Mary’s will earn the fourth seed.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Hope 10, Calvin 4

HOLLAND - Calvin's MIAA Tournament hopes came to a close with a 10-4 loss at
rival Hope Wednesday afternoon. Earlier in the year, Calvin nipped Hope 10-9 in
a non-conference game but on Wednesday, Hope turned the tables with a strong
second half.

Calvin (3-12 overall, 1-4 MIAA) battled Hope to a 2-2 halftime draw but the
host Flying Dutch (5-8 overall, 3-2 MIAA) scored five unanswered goals in the
second half to build a 9-3 lead and never looked back.

Both teams finished with 25 shots and Calvin held a 22-20 edge in ground balls
but Hope was able to find the back of the net more often than the Knights.

Calvin received lone goals from freshman Cory Remy (Zeeland/Zeeland East HS),
sophomore Nikita Blaauwendraat (Princeport, Nova Scotia/Cobequid Educational
Centre), sophomore Lissa Busscher (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and sophomore
Karissa Reed (Greenville/Greenville HS).

Senior Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) had 10 saves in
goal for Calvin.

The Knights conclude their season on Saturday, hosting Olivet at 12:30 p.m.

MEN'S LACROSSE
By Mitch Blankespor

HOLLAND, MI - The Calvin men’s lacrosse team traveled to Van Andel Stadium
Wed. evening for an MIAA game against rival Hope. The Flying Dutchmen
outscored the Knights 7-1 in the first quarter, and coasted to a 20-5 victory.

Calvin was led in scoring by a pair of Grand Rapids Christian graduates.
SophomoreTim Marco (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) scored a goal in the
third and fourth quarter while sophomore Jonathan VanderLaan (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) scored the game’s final two goals. They came at
the 7:14 mark and 6:48 mark of the fourth quarter.

Calvin was outshot 53-19 in the contest including 26-9 in the first half.
Calvin senior goalkeeper Drew Sroczynski (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian) was
credited with 10 saves.

Calvin’s biggest undoing, perhaps, came in the faceoff circle. The Knights
won just three of 28 faceoffs, and did not win their first until midway through
the third quarter. Hope outgained Calvin in ground balls, scooping up 51
compared to Calvin’s 25.

Both teams cleared at a decent percentage. Calvin converted 16 of 25 attempts
while Hope was 13-17.
Calvin falls to 2-11 on the season and 1-4 in MIAA play. With the loss,
Calvin is mathematically eliminated from MIAA Tournament contention. Calvin
returns to action Sat., Apr.27, when it hosts the Comets of Olivet College at 3
p.m.
