TERRE HAUTE, IN - (A lengthier recap will be posted by student intern Mitch
Blankespoor on the Calvin website at: http://www.calvin.edu/sports/ later this
evening).

Playing against the nation’s top scoring defense, Calvin remained unphased,
exploding for 47 second half points en route to a 72-52 first round NCAA III
Tournament victory at Rose-Hulman Institute Saturday night.

The host Engineers (24-4) came into Saturday’s game limiting opponents to just
51.0 points a game but the Knights connected on 60.9 percent (28-of-46) of
their field goal attempts including a blistering 18-of-22 (.818) in the second
half to gain its first NCAA III Tournament win since 2007.

Calvin (25-3) will face Wisconsin-Steven Point next Saturday in a second round
game at a site yet to be determined.

Calvin received 20 points from senior Tom Snikkers and 16 from senior Bryan
Powell. Junior Mickey DeVries also had 11 points off the bench.

Calvin held a 33-22 rebounding advantage. Rose-Hulman picked up 17 points from
Julian Strickland. The 72 points is the most Rose-Hulman has allowed this year.

DIVING

Calvin senior Samantha Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had a stellar
performance on day two of the NCAA Division III diving regional at Calvin's
Venema Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon, finishing second on the three-meter
board with a score of 482.60, finishing just three points behind winner Renee
Jordan of Macalester College.

On Friday night, Klaasen captured the regional one-meter diving title with a
pool record score of 496.60 points to earn an automatic qualifying spot to the
NCAA III Championships March 20-23 in Shenandoah, Texas. Klaasen will be
eligible to compete on both the one and three-meter boards and will be making
her first trip to the national meet.

Hope freshman Sarah Sheridan took sixth on the three-meter board Saturday with
a score of 439.90 points. She is an alternate to the national meet. Also
competing for Calvin on Saturday was freshman Sarah Roth (Brighton/Brighton
HS). Roth took 14th with a score of 388.35 points.

"I'm really proud of both of our divers," said Calvin diving coach Aaron
Paskvan. "Sam was steady as a rock all weekend. She rose to the challenge and
she's got another three weeks to her collegiate diving career as a result.
Sarah was battling an injury but she refused to use that as an excuse and she
competed hard. Diving this weekend was a valuable experience for her and it
will help her in future years. She has a bright future ahead of her."

This year Calvin served as one of four regional qualification sites in diving
for the NCAA III Championships. This is the first year that the NCAA has used a
regional qualification system for diving at the Division III level.

MEN'S LACROSSE

DEFIANCE, OH - The Calvin men's lacrosse team picked up its first win as a
varsity program, edging host Defiance 5-4 Saturday afternoon.

Calvin (1-4) scored a pair of fourth quarter goals to gain the
come-from-behind win. Senior Greg Boer (Demotte, IN/Kankakee HS) tied the game
at four in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter on a feed from freshman
D.J. VanderBaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). With 10:52 remaining,
junior Casey Harless (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) scored the game-winner with
sophomore Tim Marco (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) drawing the assist
on the play.

"We're thrilled to get our first win as a varsity program," said Calvin head
coach Joel Kamstra. "It's good to get some affirmation for the work these guys
are putting in."

Calvin took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Marco and sophomore Jonathon
VanderLaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with the Marco goal coming
in the first quarter and the VanderLaan tally in the second.

Defiance answered with three unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a
3-2 halftime lead and then scored midway through the third quarter to build a
4-2 advantage.

VanderBaan then stepped up with an unassisted goal late in the third quarter
to cut the deficit to 4-3.
