Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams Take First Place at Trine Invitational;
NCAA III Tournament Selection Shows for Basketball To Be Announced Monday - Tuesday Basketball Lunch at Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex Scheduled
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams both posted first place performances at the Trine Invitational Saturday. On the men's side, Calvin recorded 172.5 points with Trine taking second with 112 points. On the women's side, Calvin recorded 172 points with Hope taking second with 112 points.
Highlights for the Calvin men included:
*Senior Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) win the mile run (4:18.45) with junior Sam Kerk (Hartland, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) taking second (4:21.98) and senior Kevin Peterson (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking fifth (4:24.46).
*Junior Gabe Gunnink (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning the 3,000 meters (8:51.22) while sophomore Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) taking third (8:55.90), sophomore Jacob Kuyvenhoven (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking fourth (8:57.98) and senior Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) taking fifth (9:03.09).
*Senior Dan Kerr (Pestoskey/Petoskey HS) winning the 5,000 meters (14:37.76) with senior Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS) taking second (15:10.63), junior Phillip Spitzer (Buckley/Buckley HS) taking third (15:21.54) and senior David VandeBunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) taking fourth (15:27.53).
*Sophomore Erik Holstege (Kewsick, VA/Monticello HS) taking second in the 60 meter hurdles (8.73) and third in the long jump (21-8).
*Junior Evert Geerlings (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) taking second in the pole vault (13-5 1/4).
*Freshman Gerrit van Klaveren (Sarnia, ON) winning the triple jumpe (42-10 1/4).
*Senior Aaron Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) taking second in the shot put (52-1 1/4).
*Calvin's distance medley relay team of sophomore Stephen Tubergen (Arlington Heights, IL/John Hersey HS), sophomore Stephen Nooregaard (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North HS), freshman Jeff Meitler (New Berlin, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) and sophomore Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley HS) taking first place in a time of 10:33.55.

On the women's side, Calvin had several big performances. Some of the notables included:
*Junior Julie Busscher (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) winning the 60 meter dash (8.02).
*Sophomore Kate Ardinger (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) taking second in the mile run (5:10.02).
*Senior Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) winnint he 3,000 meters (10:29.27).
*Junior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) winning the 5,000 meters (17:09.59) with junior Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan/Home Schooled) placing third (18:44.33).
*Sophomore Kelley Tuinenga (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) taking second in the high jump (4-11 3/4).
*Sophomore Christian Geating (Abington, PA/Abington HS) winning the pole vault with a career-best mark of 11-1.
*Junior Hilary Banning (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) taking second in the triple jump (34-4 1/4).
*Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of freshman McKenzie Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS), junior Olivia Butler (Grant/Grant HS), Busscher and junior Stephanie Bennett (Rockford, IL/Christian Life Center) winning in a time of 4:07.37 while Calvin's distance medley relay team of senior Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS), junior Rebekah Folkema (Renfrew, ON/Renfrew Collegiate Institute) and senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) took first place in a season-best time of 12:02.58. That time should put the Calvin distance medley relay team high on the national qualifying list.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The NCAA III Tournament fields for men's and women's basketball will be announced on Monday with the men's field set to be announced at 12:30 p.m. with the women's field to be announced at 2:30 p.m. The selection show for men's and women's basketball will be available via a live video stream at: http://www.ncaa.com.
The Calvin men's basketball team has earned an automatic berth into the NCAA III Tournament field while the women's team has a strong chance to receive an at-large bid.
On Tuesday, a special NCAA III Tournament lunch will take place inside the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex that is open to the public and is sponsored by the Calvin C' Club.
The lunch will take place inside the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex lobby from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26. The Calvin basketball coaching staff will preview the 2013 Tournament for Knight fans. Mike Le Febre (1992) and Aaron Winkle (2000), alumni players who experienced a tournament run all the way to a national championship, will share some stories of the games and plays that they remember well. Q-and-A time, too.
All are welcome. The Knight Way Cafe will offer lunch specials, so you can grab a meal and a chair and talk tournament basketball with other Knights. Lunch will be available beginning at 11:30 a.m. and the program will begin promptly at noon. Do join us on the 26th and get ready to cheer on the Knights!
