Day Two Recap of MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

JENISON, MI – The second day of the 2013 MIAA Swimming and Diving
Championships concluded Thursday evening at Jension High School. The Calvin
women hold a slim lead over Hope, 283.5-272. On the men’s side, Kalamazoo is
the leader with 299 points. The Knights currently sit in second place with 219
points.
MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The first event on the schedule for the men was the 200 yard freestyle relay.
The Calvin relay team of senior Mark Rushlow (Goshen, Ind./Northridge),
freshman Mitchell Schroder (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian), freshman
Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) and sophomore Alex Baumann
(Holland/Holland Christian) finished fourth with a time of 1:25.23, roughly
three seconds behind champion Kalamazoo.
The next event was the 500 yard free style Calvin freshmen Aaron Venema (Grand
Haven/Grand Haven HS) and Caleb Meindertsma (Annandale, Va./Trinity Christian)
finished in fourth and fifth place respectively for Calvin.
The men’s 200 yard individual medley followed. Calvin had two top-three
finishers. Senior Stephen Kraft (Warsaw, Ind./Home Schooled) finished second
with a time of 1:56.76 while sophomore Travis Vincent (Novi/Novi HS) finished
right behind Kraft with a time of 1:57.01.
The quickest event, the 50 yard freestyle came next. Calvin junior Andrew
Mitchell (Iron Mountain/Kingsford) came in sixth.
The final race of the day on the men’s side, the 400 yard medley relay, proved
to be the most thrilling. The Calvin team of Mitchell, freshman Johnson
Cochran (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon HS), Rushlow and Schroder won the
event with an NCAA B-Cut time of 3:22.77; finishing over a second and a half
ahead of the top-seeded Kalamazoo relay team. The time broke the previous
Calvin record of 3:24.76 set a year ago.

WOMEN’s SWIMMING AND DIVING
The women’s first event was the 200 yard freestyle relay. The Calvin team of
freshman Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS), sophomore Kathryn Wrobel
(Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View), senior Stephie Fox (Kentwood/Home Schooled)
and senior Kristy Kinzer (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) finished second with a
time of 1:36.47, which earns the Knights an NCAA B-Cut time.
The 500 yard freestyle featured a very close finish; too close, in fact, to
declare a winner. Wrobel and Kalamazoo freshman Lauren Seroka (Canton/Plymouth
Salem) tied for first with an NCAA B-Cut time of 5:00.07.
Calvin earned another individual MIAA championship in the women’s 200 yard
individual medley. Rookus finished in first place with an NCAA B-Cut time of
2:06.60.

The women took to the three-meter board for diving following the 50 yard
freestyle. Calvin and Hope dominated the diving. Calvin senior Samantha
Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian) finished first with an overall score of
458.35. Hope freshman Sarah Sheridan (Richmond, Ind./Richmond HS) finished in
second place with 416.55 points. Calvin sophomore Rebecca Mumby (Spring
Lake/Spring Lake HS) and freshman Sarah Roth (Brighton/Brighton HS) finished in
third and fourth place respectively.
“I was extremely pleased with the results today,” Calvin diving coach Aaron
Paskvan said. “Sam [Klaasen] earned a personal best tonight.”
The final event of the day for the women was the 400 yard medley relay. The
Calvin squad of Kinzer, senior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage
Christian), senior Rachel Colasurdo (Chesapeake, Va./Home Schooled) and Rookus
finished in first with an NCAA B-Cut time of 3:54.61
 “Finishing the day with two MIAA championship relays is exciting,” Gelderloos
said. “We need to keep it going tomorrow.”

The MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships will continue from Jenison High
School tomorrow starting with the prelims at 10:00 a.m. and the finals at 5:30
p.m.
