Carissa Verkaik Named to D3hoops.com National Team of the Week;
Ally Wolffis Featured in Muskegon Chronicle;
Swimming and Diving Teams Prepare for MIAA Championships
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
Calvin College senior Carissa Verkaik has been named to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week.
 
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik led Calvin to three wins last week and nearly notched a triple-double in a win against Olivet this past Saturday with 32 points, eight rebounds and eight blocked shots. Calvin opened the week with a win over Trine Monday night and followed with a triumph at Saint Mary's Wednesday.
 
Over the course of the three games, She averaged 23.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots in a 3-0 week.
 
Verkaik is currently ranked third nationally in field goal percentage (.585) and free throw percentage (.885) and is ranked 8th in blocked shots per-game (3.23) and 16th in scoring average (20.2 ppg).

MORE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
Over the past four years, Calvin senior Ally Wolffis has been a key part of the Calvin women's basketball program, starting at power forward the last three years and earning first team All-MIAA honors as a sophomore.
 
A native of Muskegon and a graduate of Muskegon Mona Shores High School, she has also balanced the demands of being a student-athlete as a nursing major along with the demands of battling a live-long physical ailment.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
 
The MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships will take place this week at Jenison High School beginning Wednesday night and continuing on through Saturday evening with morning prelims set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday and championship finals set for the evening each night. On Wednesday, the finals of the 800 freestyle relay for men and women will take place along with the prelims for the men's one-meter diving competition.

CALVIN SWIMMING AND DIVING NOTES:
 
*Senior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) is the two-time defending champion in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. A Calvin swimmer has won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events the last seven years.

*Senior Samantha Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) is the two-time defending champion on the one-meter diving board. She was the 2011 champion on the three-meter board.
 
*Sophomore Erika Waugh (Berne, IN/South Adams HS) is the defending champion in the 200 backstroke.
 
*Calvin is the defending champion in the 200 freestyle relay and has won the event 7 of the last 8 years.
 
*Calvin is the defending champion in the 200 medley relay and has won the event 5 of the last 6 years.
 
*The Calvin women have won the last eight MIAA titles and are currently ranked 20th in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America Division III Top 20 poll.
 
*On the men's side, senior Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN/Northridge HS) is the defending MIAA champion in the 100 butterfly.
 
*The Calvin men have finished in fourth place at the MIAA Championships the last six years. Calvin is seeking to finish in the top three for the first time since the 2006 MIAA Championships.
