Handful of Calvin Athletes Compete at GVSU Big Meet;
Calvin/Hope Men's Basketball Game Set for 184th Meeting
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
ALLENDALE - A small group of Calvin track and field athletes competed in the
Division I and Division II dominated Grand Valley State Big Meet on Friday
night.
On the women's side, senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian
HS) had a strong time of 17:31.69 that will put her in contention for a top-10
spot on the national NCAA III indoor performance list. Sophomore Kimby Penning
(Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a strong time of 18:29.75.
In the men's 5,000 meters, senior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) had a
season-best indoor time of 14:38.52 that should also place him in the top 10 on
the national NCAA III indoor list. Senior Job Christiansen (New Ipswich,
NH/Mascenic Regional HS) added a time of 14:55.22 while junior Phillip Spitzer
(Buckley/Buckley HS) came in at 15:20.71 and sophomore Jacob Kuyvenhoven (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) at 15:24.43.
The bulk of Calvin's team will compete in its own Calvin Invitational Saturday
inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Field events will begin at 11:30
a.m. with running events set to start at 1 p.m.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The 184th edition of the Calvin/Hope men’s basketball rivalry will take place
on Saturday at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse at 3 p.m. Calvin will enter the game
ranked 13th in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and fourth in the first
set of NCAA III Great Lakes regional rankings. The Knights are 20-2 overall and
11-0 in the MIAA while Hope is 14-8 overall and 9-2 in the MIAA. Calvin claimed
the first meeting by a score of 75-49. Saturday’s game will be televised by
West Michigan PBS affiliate WGVU-TV. Below is a link to the video stream of the
