Men's Basketball Tops Kalamazoo;
Swimming and Diving Teams Split at Albion

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 92, Kalamazoo 50

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Calvin College men’s basketball team continued to roll
Saturday afternoon defeated the Kalamazoo College Hornets 92-50 at the Van
Noord Arena. The Knights, who were ranked 17th in the most recent d3hoops.com
men’s basketball poll, improve to 19-2, 10-0 MIAA on the season.
Calvin, which had a significant height advantage, used it right from the
start. Junior center Tyler Kruis (Grandville/Calvin Christian) scored three of
Calvin’s first four baskets en route to an early 11-2 lead four minutes into
the game.
Kalamazoo kept the game close with sharp shooting from distance. Junior Mark
Ghafari (Grosse Pointe Shores/University Liggett) hit three deep triples in the
first half.
The highlight of the first half came with 9:06 remaining in the first half.
Senior guard Bryan Powell (Wyoming/Wyoming Park) picked off a pass from Adam
Peters (Hickory Corners/Gull Lake) and dunked in transition. The dunk gave
Calvin a 25-15 lead.
Despite the shooting from Kalamazoo, the Knights took a 42-29 lead into
halftime.
Calvin shot 44.2 percent from the field in the first half. Kruis had already
earned a double-double scoring 21 points and grabbing ten rebounds in the first
half. The Knights outrebounded the Hornets 32-14.
Kalamazoo shot an even 50 percent (7-14) from beyond the arc. Ghafari led the
Hornets, who hit just two two-point field goals, with nine points at halftime.

The Hornets could not get any closer in the second half. Calvin continued to
used its height advantage, and coasted to a 42-point victory.
“We really tried to highlight guarding [Mark] Ghafari,” Calvin head coach
Kevin Vande Streek said. “David [Rietema] takes it personal when someone
scores in him. He did a very nice job this afternoon.”
Kruis finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds, two points away from tying his
career high. Powell finished with 17 points and five assists. Senior Tom
Snikkers (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) finished with 16 points and seven
rebounds. Snikkers moves into 11th place on Calvin’s all-time scoring list
with 1,341 points.
“Tyler [Kruis] did a nice job of backing his defender down close enough to the
basket and finishing,” Vande Streek said.
Calvin outrebounded Kalamazoo 67-28, and held the Hornets to just 23.9 percent
shooting from the field.
Calvin returns to action Wed., Jan. 6, when it travels to Alma for a 7:00 p.m.
contest against the Scots.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING

ALBION - Traveling to Albion to take on the Britons, the men's and women's
swim and dive teams split the meet as the women took home a victory, 166-133,
and the men took a narrow defeat, 141-134. The Calvin women complete their dual
meet season with an overall record of 6-3 including a record of 6-0 against
league foes. The Calvin men finish 4-4 overall in dual meet action and 3-2
against league opponents.

In the first event of the night, the women's 200 medley relay, the Calvin B
Relay team took second as the A relay team was disqualified. The B relay team
of sophomore Kathryn Wrobel, freshman Mary Hudson, senior Kristy Kinzer and
senior Rachel Colasurdo finished in 2:00.22.

 In the next event, the 1000 freestyle, the Knights took 1-4, as sophomore
Erika Waugh earned first in 11:28.84, senior Savannah VanWormer second in
11:37.34, senior Elizabeth Counsell third in 11:48.65, and sophomore Maggie
McLaurin fourth in 11:50.00. In the 200 freestyle, sophomore Alex Dhaenens took
second in 2:07.56. Freshman Michaela Rookus then took first in the 100
backstroke in 1:04.18, while Wrobel took third in 1:10.35. Sophomore Alexi
Scott took first in the 100 breastroke in 1:12.05, followed in second by senior
Stephie Fox in 1:16.08 In the 200 butterfly, Colasurdo took second in 2:23.31.
Kinzer took another second in the next event, the 50 free in 26.08. In the 100
freestyle, senior Shelby Cloyd took a narrow second place as she finished in
57.98, four hundredths of a second behind first place. Kinzer earned another
top finish as she took first in 200 backstroke in 2:13.69.

Colasurdo continued her domination in the 200 breaststroke as she earned
another first place finish, this in 2:38.31. In the 500 freestyle, Fox took
first in 5:22.64. In the 100 fly, Hudson took second in 1:07.43. Waugh took
second in the 200 IM in 2:22.65. The final event saw the Calvin B Relay team
take second in the 200 free relay. The team of Scott, Rookus, Kinzer, and
freshman Alayna Gallegos finished in 1:46.47. On the diving boards, senior
Samantha Klaasen took first in both the one meter and three meter boards, with
scores of 270.45 and 290.18, respectively.

On the men's side, the Calvin A relay and B relay teams took second and third
in the 200 medley relay. The A team of senior Mark Rushlow, junior Morgan
Zalochi, junior Peter Johnson and senior Sam Allison finished in 1:42.05 while
the B team of freshman Mitchell Schroder, sophomore Travis Vincent, junior Adam
Alexander and sophomore Alex Baumann finished in 1:42.64. In the 1000
freestyle, Schroder picked up a first place finish in 10:40.26. Sophomore
Nathan Terschak then took a third place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.63.
In the 100 backstroke, freshman Brandon Muma took first in 57.13.

The 100 breaststroke saw junior Andrew Vanderlei take second in 1:02.77. In
the 200 butterfly, Calvin finished 1-2-3 as junior Peter Johnson took first in
2:04.20, Vincent second in 2:07.69 and senior Stephen Kraft third in 2:11.90.
Muma earned another first place finish in the 50 freestyle in 22.76. In the 100
free, junior Aaron Venema took second in 50.09 and Allison third in 50.87. In
the 200 backstroke, Rushlow took second in 2:09.78.

Johnson earned another top finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.43. Freshman
Johnson Cochran and Terschak then took second and third in the 500 freestyle in
5:08.66 and 5:15.83, respectively. Junior Andrew Mitchell took first in the 100
fly in 54.57. In the 200 IM, Vincent took second in 2:04.01. The meet came down
to the final event, with Albion holding a two point lead. Albion held onto the
lead in the 200 freestyle relay, taking first, with the Calvin A relay of Muma,
Rushlow, Schroder, and Mitchell taking second in 1:27.91 and the C relay of
Vanderlei, freshman Jacob Huisman, Johnson, and freshman Paul Freeman finished
third in 1:34.10.

Up next for both teams is the MIAA Championships which will be held at Jenison
High School 13-16.
