Carissa Verkaik Named MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week;
Stephanie Fox Named MIAA Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Calvin men's basketball team has made a move up in the latest set of
D3hoops.com Top 25 rankings while the Calvin women's team continues to hold its
number-two spot.
After breaking into the poll last week at the #21 spot, the Calvin men's
basketball team is ranked #17th in this week's poll. St. Thomas (MN) holds the
number-one spot while Rochester (NY) is ranked second.
On the women's side, Calvin is ranked second for the fourth consecutive week.
The Knights received two first place votes in this week's poll with DePauw
holding the top spot with 23 first place votes. Rival Hope is right behind the
Calvin women as the Flying Dutch are ranked third.
The Calvin men's team travels to Olivet on Wednesday for an 8 p.m. contest
while the Calvin women's team will host Albion at 7:30 p.m.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named
Calvin center Carissa Verkaik its Player of the Week in women’s basketball for
games played through January 19.
Verkaik, a senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), became the leading
career scorer in MIAA women’s basketball history Wednesday as she scored 37
points in an 85-62 road victory over Adrian. She also grabbed 11 rebounds,
blocked three shots and added three assists.
She now has 1,055 points in 56 MIAA league games for her career.
She then became the first player in Calvin women’s history to go over 2,000
career points overall as she added 22 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked
shots in a 74-54 nonconference victory over Rochester. Verkaik, who is being
honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and tenth time in
her career, shot 57 percent from the field (21 of 37) and 89 percent at the
free-throw line (17 of 19) for the week.
Calvin is back in action Wednesday evening when it hosts Albion at 7:30 p.m.
at Van Noord Arena.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named
Calvin’s Stephie Fox its Women’s Athlete of the Week in swimming and diving for
meets through January 19. Fox, a senior from Kentwood (Homeschooled), helped
lead Calvin to three MIAA dual meet victories for the weekend.
She won the 1,000 freestyle by more than 18 seconds in a time of 10:45.97 in a
Friday meet against Kalamazoo and Saint Mary’s, then provided an early spark on
Saturday by winning the 200 freestyle in 1:57.23 in a 164-136 victory over
Hope. She also finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:18.22) against
Kalamazoo and Saint Mary’s, and second in the 500 freestyle (5:22.42) against
Hope.
Fox is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career.
