Swimming and Diving Teams Compete Against Kalamazoo/Saint Mary's;
Track and Field Teams Compete at GVSU Mike Lints Invitational
 
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
 
NOTRE DAME, IN - The Calvin women's swimming and diving team picked up a pair of dual meet victories on Friday night while the Calvin men's swimming and diving team suffered its first dual meet loss against an MIAA foe. In competition hosted by Saint Mary's College at the University of Notre Dame, the Calvin women defeated Kalamazoo 151-90 and Saint Mary's 186-54 while the Calvin men were defeated by Kalamazoo 157-77.
 
The Calvin women's team is now 4-3 in dual meet competition this year including 4-0 against MIAA opponents while the Calvin men's team is 3-3 overall including 2-1 against league opponents.
 
Winners for Calvin in the women's competition included:
 
*Senior Stephanie Fox (Kentwood/Home Schooled) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:45.97).
 
*Sophomore Lexi Scott (Richmond, IN/Richmond HS) in the 200 IM (2:16.62).
 
*Senior Samantha Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) on the one-meter (236.90) and three-meter (274.50) diving boards.
 
*Freshman Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) in the 100 freestyle (55.25).
 
*Sophomore Erika Waugh (Berne, IN/South Adams HS) in the 100 backstroke (1:03.42).
 
*Senior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.28).
 
On the men's side, Calvin's victories came from senior Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN/Northridge HS) in the 100 butterfly (52.79) and freshman Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon HS) in the 100 breaststroke (58.47).
 
Second place finishes included:
 
*Freshman Aaron Venema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:11.42).
 
*Rushlow in the 50 freestyle (21.97).
 
*Freshman Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS) in the 100 freestyle (48.70).
 
*Junior Andrew Mitchell (Iron Mountain/Kingsford HS) in the 100 backstroke (54.55).
 
Both Calvin teams are back in action on Saturday, hosting rival Hope at 1 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center with an alumni reception set to follow after the meet.
 
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
 
ALLENDALE - The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Mike Lints Invitational hosted by Grand Valley State University on Friday.
 
Top performances for the Calvin women included:
 
*Senior Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS) placing third in the 800 meters (2:20.08).
 
*Sophomore Christina Geating (Abington, PA/Abington HS) placing 10th in the pole vault (10-4).
 
*Junior Hilary Banning (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) placing fifth in the triple jump (33-4 3/4).
 
Notable performances for the Calvin men included:
 
*Sophomore Jacob Kuyvenhoven (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) placing fourth in the 5,000 meters (15:36.34).
 
*Sophomore Erik Holstege (Kewsick, VA/Monticello HS) placing eighth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.85).
 
*Junior Andrew Dykstra (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) placing eighth in the shot put (46-6 3/4).
 
Both Calvin track and field teams are back in action next Friday and Saturday, competing in a Friday/Saturday invitational at Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee, Illinois.
