CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR NOV. 28, 2012

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 77, Albion 42

By Mark DeHaan

ALBION - The Calvin women’s basketball team opened the MIAA portion of its
schedule Wednesday night, traveling to Albion College’s Kresge Gymnasium to
face the Britons. The Knights got off to a hot start and did not look back,
earning the 77-42 win as Calvin shot 47%, 10-for-25 from three point range. The
Knights jumped out to an early 16-5 lead, led by sophomore Kayla Engelhard.
Engelhard, who was named MIAA player of the week last week, picked up right
where she left off, scoring 10 of Calvin’s first 16 points.
Albion then cut the Knights lead to seven on two occasions before Calvin
started to roll. The Knights extended their lead via a 22-6 run that gave
Calvin a commanding 40-18 advantage with two minutes to play in the first
half.
Calvin took the 22 point lead into halftime as the teams traded buckets over
the final two minutes to make the score 42-20 heading into the intermission.
Engelhard led all scorers at halftime with 14 points, while senior Carissa
Verkaik added 10 points.
The Knights continued to slowly expand their lead in the second half as their
starters rested. Calvin’s backups scored 25 of the Knights 35 second half
points, building the lead to as much as 35 points with a minute and a half
remaining.
In the end, Calvin’s depth was just too much for the Britons as the Knights
earned the 77-42 victory.
Every Knight earned playing time while each player put points into the stat
sheet. Engelhard led Calvin on offense with 17 points and four assists. Verkaik
added 14 points and six rebounds, while seniors Kelsey Irwin and Heather
DeKleine and freshman Abby VanderWoude all chipped in six.
“We got off to a really nice start. We feel like we are really deep, we’ve got
some good new players on the end of our bench. All the extra minutes they can
get will help us later on in the season,” said head coach John Ross. “Our
starters really stepped up did a great job and we did a great job defensively
holding them to 42 points. Albion is always a tough, hostile environment. They
are a team that can score a lot of points, so that was a good to see.”
Calvin’s next matchup is against the Scots of Alma next week Wednesday. The
Knights (5-1 overall, 1-0 MIAA) will be traveling to Alma, with the tipoff
scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
