GRAND RAPIDS – The Calvin College women’s volleyball team opened up NCAA III
Tournament play with a three set victory of Heidelberg University by scores of
25-15, 25-13, 25-17.

The Knights got off to an early lead in the first set. Senior libero Kelly
Gordon (Caledonia/South Christian) served four straight times, giving the
Knights a 4-0 lead. Kill by junior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand
Rapids Christian) and senior Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids
Christian) as well as two blocks gave the Knights an 11-4 lead over the Berg
forcing head coach Jason Miller to call timeout. The student prince could not
draw closer to the Knights’ lead, and fell in the first set.

Calvin tallied four blocks in the first set en route to holding Heidelberg to
a mere .057 hitting percentage in the first set. The Knights hit a .361 clip.

The Berg hung with the Knights in the beginning of the second set. Three
Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian) kills gave Calvin a 12-7 lead
forcing another timeout from Miller. Heidelberg got within three points at
12-9, but three Lizzie Kamp kills and two attack errors from junior Amber
Welfle extended Calvin’s lead to 19-11. Calvin coasted to a second set
victory.

Calvin had 14 kills on 29 attack attempts in the second set, good for a .448
hitting percentage. Heidelberg improved slightly in the second set, but still
hit only a .083 clip.

The Knights did not let up in the third set. Once again, Calvin jumped out to
an early 5-1 lead behind a service run from Gordon. The Berg came back to tie
the set at 7-7, but back-to-back attack errors gave the Knights the lead. Two
kills from Rietema followed by three kills from Lizzie Kamp gave the Knights
the clinching set victory.

Calvin hit a blistering .373 for the match. The Knights defense held
Heidelberg to under a .100 hitting percentage for the match using seven blocks
to do so. Four Knights totaled double-digits in digs.

Lizzie Kamp paced Calvin scoring 14 kills. Rietema dished out 29 assists
while recording three block assists.

Senior Marian Bevington led the Berg with 11 kills in defeat.

“I was pleased with our intensity tonight,” Calvin head coach Amber Warners
said after the match. “We kept up the high level of play throughout the entire
match.”

Calvin (29-2) will face off against Mount Union (27-6) at 7:00 p.m. The
Purple Raiders defeated Medaille College in straight sets.

The first matchup of the day will feature the Wittenberg Tigers (26-4) against
the Flying Dutch of Hope College (29-4) at 4:30 p.m. Wittenberg defeated Ohio
Northern in straight sets while Hope defeated Otterbein in straight sets.

Two members of the Calvin women's volleyball team have been named to the AVCA
Division III Great Lakes All-Region team and are now eligible for AVCA Division
III All-America consideration. Those two individuals are senior Lizzie Kamp and
junior Megan Rietema. In addition, freshman Maggie Kamp has received AVCA
Division III Great Lakes All-Region honorable mention recognition.

School. An outside hitter, she has hit at a .319 clip this fall and is

Otterbein/Capital All-Tournament team earlier this fall. She is making her
fourth straight appearance on the Great Lakes All-Region team.

Last week she was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player, becoming the second
member from her family to receive the award as her older sister Rebecca was a
three-time MIAA MVP. Lizzie was also named to the All-MIAA first team last
weekend, receiving the honor for the third straight year.
