Men's Soccer Closes MIAA Regular Season With Win at Alma;
Swimming and Diving Teams Crack Top 25 Rankings;
Women's Basketball Ranked Number-One By Two More Polls;
Cross Country Athletes Receive MIAA Runner of the Week Honors
 
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Alma 1
 
ALMA - The 22nd-ranked Calvin men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 win at Alma on
Tuesday. Battling cold and blustery conditions, Calvin jumped out to a 2-0
halftime lead behind first half goals from sophomore Travis Vegter
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and senior Chris Nance (Washington, MI/Warren
DeLaSalle HS). Senior Nick Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) assisted on
the Vegter goal while freshman Sam Hanover (Saint Johns, MI/Saint Johns HS)
picked up the assist on the goal by Nance.
 
Alma tallied in the 81st minute on a shot by Max Vanderpool but could not
score again as the Knights held on for the win.
 
Both teams had 16 shots at goal. Calvin senior goalkeeper Jared Rushlau
(Grandville/Grandville HS) had five saves for the Knights. Graham Wallace had
five saves for Alma.
 
Calvin will now prepare to host an MIAA Tournament semifinal game against
Kalamazoo on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Calvin's Zuidema Field.

Calvin moved up to 22nd in the Division III National Soccer Coaches
Association Top 25 poll on Tuesday. The Knights were ranked 24th in last week’s
poll. Calvin closes out its MIAA season with a 12-1-1 conference record. The
Knights are currently 14-3-1 overall heading into Thursday’s MIAA Tournament
semifinal match.

The Calvin women's basketball team has been ranked as the preseason number one
by two additional national polls. Earlier this fall, the Knights were ranked
number one by Women's Division III News. The Knights are also ranked number one
by D3hoops.com and also the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

SWIMMING AND DIVING
 
The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams have cracked the first
set of Division III Top 25 rankings released by Collegeswimming.com. The Calvin
women are ranked 15th in the poll while the Calvin men are ranked 25th. Both
teams are preparing for busy weekends as the the Knights travel to Alma on
Friday for a 6 p.m. dual meet and then journey to Wheaton on Saturday for a 1
p.m. dual meet. The Calvin/Wheaton women's dual meet will feature a matchup of
nationally-ranked teams as the Wheaton women are ranked eighth.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
 
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named
Calvin’s Dan Kerr and Nicole Michmerhuizen as its Runners of the Week in cross
country for meets through Oct. 27.

Kerr, a senior from Petoskey (Petoskey HS), won the MIAA championship meet for
the second consecutive year Saturday at Whiffle Tree Golf Club in Concord,
covering the 8-kilometer course in 24:37. He finished 12 seconds ahead of his
nearest competitor as he lead Calvin to its 26th consecutive MIAA men’s cross
country championship. Kerr is being honored as Runner of the Week for the third
time this season and fourth time in his career.

Michmerhuizen, a junior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), took first place
in Saturday’s MIAA championship meet at Whiffle Tree Golf Club in Concord by 17
seconds, completing the 6-kilometer course in 21:49. Her performance led the
Knights to the MIAA championship.

Michmerhuizen is being honored as Runner of the Week for the second time this
season and in her career.
