Women's Soccer Falls in Overtime at Kalamazoo
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Kalamazoo 1, Calvin 0 (OT)
KALAMAZOO – The Calvin women’s soccer team battled Kalamazoo into
overtime Thursday night at Kalamazoo’s Mackenzie Field. The Hornets
were not to be denied on senior day, as senior Jackie Short scored her
16th goal of the season, defeating the Knights seven minutes into the
first overtime.
Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 15-14 in the contest. The
Knights also held the advantage in corner kicks 10-7. Calvin had three
good chances in the game. The first coming form freshmen Paige Capel,
who shot toward the far post, only to be saved by Kalamazoo goalkeeper
Lucy Mailing. The second came from sophomore Elle Burman, who sent a
chip shot far post in the 35th minute that was tipped over the crossbar
by Mailing. The final quality scoring chance came with two minutes to go
in regulation. Junior Kelly Koets got a head on a corner kick sent by
freshmen Sydney Kinney. The shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Calvin
still sits atop the MIAA with 31 points. Hope and Kalamazoo sit with 29
points while Adrian has 28. All teams have two more regular season
games remaining. Calvin returns to action Saturday when it hosts the
Flying Dutch of Hope College.
The game is slated to start at noon at
Calvin’s Zuidema Field.
Calvin is now 1-2-1 in overtime games this year. The Knights are battling for
one of the four spots for the upcoming MIAA Tournament.
