CALVIN KNIGHT SATURDAY SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT. 13, 2012

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

OSHKOSH, WI - The Calvin men's and women's cross country teams had banner
performances on Saturday as both teams took first place at the
Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational.

On the men's side, sixth-ranked Calvin finished ahead of top-ranked North
Central as the Knights recorded 52 points, six points ahead of North Central's
total of 58 points. Wisconsin-Eau Claire, ranked 25th, took third with 93
points while third-ranked Washington of Missouri took fourth with 127 points.

On the women's side, eighth-ranked Calvin took first place with a team score of
91 points while 16th-ranked Chicago took second (114 points), 10th-ranked
Wisconsin-Eau Claire third (115 points) and 23rd-ranked Hope fourth (172
points).

Senior Dan Kerr led the charge for the Calvin men, placing second with a time
of 24:49, finishing a half-second behind race winner Noah Droddy of DePauw.
Senior Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS) also cracked the
top 10 with an eighth place time of 25:17. The Knights then packed up senior
David VandeBunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) in 13th (26:57), junior Sam
Kerk (Hartland, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) in 14th (25:27) and senior Greg
Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) in 15th (25:30). Rounding out Calvin's top
seven were sophomore Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) in 49th
(26:01) and sophomore Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) in 65th
(26:09) while senior Kevin Peterson (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS)
took 66th (26:09).

The Calvin women were led by senior Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids
Christian HS) who placed sixth in 21:54 while junior Nicole Michmerhuizen
(Holland/Holland Christian HS) was 14th (22:23).

Sophomore Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a strong
race, finishing 19th (22:41) while sophomore Lizzy Vannette (Visalia,
CA/Central Valley Christian HS) was 23rd (22:46) and freshman McKenzie Diemer
(Caledonia/South Christian HS) 29th (22:52). Rounding out Calvin's top seven
were sophomore Paige McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) in 48th (23:18) and senior
Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS)) in 54th (23:20). Sophomore Sarah
Danner (Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS) was also 58th (23:22).

"We really had a great day with both of our teams," said Calvin head cross
country coach Brian Diemer. "I am so pleased with how both of our teams stepped
up under adverse weather conditions. Our runners left any excuses on the bus
and came to compete. This was a nice stepping-stone for our program this year."

Calvin also sent teams to the Manchester Invitational on Saturday. On the
women's side, Calvin took third with 60 points. On the men's side, Calvin took
third with 62 points. Sophomore Nick McKee (Arlington Hts, IL/John Hersey HS)
was Calvin's top finisher in the men's race, placing seventh in 26:51. Senior
Hannah Kregel (Iowa City, IA/Iowa City HS) was the top finisher for the Calvin
women, placing ninth in 23:47.

Both teams will now prepare for the MIAA Championships, slated to be held
October 27 with Albion College serving as host.

WOMEN'S GOLF

BATTLE CREEK - The Calvin women's golf team took third place at the MIAA Fall
Tournament with a team score of 695 strokes. It marked Calvin's best-ever
finish at the tournament. Calvin finished one stroke ahead of rival Hope at the
tournament and finished fourth in the final MIAA fall standings.

Olivet defended its MIAA fall title from a year ago, finishing with a two-day
first place total of 659 strokes while Saint Mary's was second with 680
strokes. The 36-hole MIAA Fall Tournament makes up the final two rounds of the
six-round MIAA fall season.

In finishing fourth in the final league standings, Calvin once again qualifies
for the four-team MIAA Spring Tournament which determines the league's
automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament.

Junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northfor the Knights, shooting a two-day total of 161 (79-82) that left her in
second place in the final tournament standings. Canto earned a spot on the
All-Tournament team for the second straight year and also finished third in the
final MIAA overall fall standings to land a spot on the All-MIAA first team.
Canto finished the fall season with an average of 81.2 strokes-per-round,
breaking her own school (season) record of 82.7 set a year ago.

Senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a two-day
total of 172 (86-86) to finish tied for 11th at the tournament. She also
finished sixth in the final MIAA overall standings to earn a spot on the
All-MIAA first team for the first time in her career.

Freshman Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) was next for Calvin with a 178 (90-88)
while freshman Jennie Poole () had a 184 (94-90) and freshman Sarah Arendsen
(Wayland/Wayland HS) a 194 (99-95).

Competing individually for the Knights, Calvin senior Rachel Whitaker (Grand
Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) had a 191 (100-91).

GRAND RAPIDS – In a matchup of the top two teams in the MIAA, Calvin outlasted
Alma, defeating the Scots 1-0 on a rainy afternoon at Zuidema Field.

Calvin almost got on the board in the fourth minute. Junior Danielle Carter
(DeWitt/DeWitt) fed a through ball to freshmen Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity
Christian) on the near sideline. Capel shot far post. Alma goalkeeper Morgan
Waier tipped the ball just wide of the net.

Alma held the upper hand in possession for the next fifteen minutes. The Scots
put two shots on net, but Calvin junior goalkeeper Ashton Hearn denied Alma a
goal. The Knights responded, enjoying the advantage in possession for the rest
of the first half. Calvin outshot Alma 13-4 in the session, but could not get
on the scoreboard.

The first 20 minutes of the second half were evenly matched. In the 77th
minute, Calvin earned a corner kick. Sophomore Elle Burman (Jenison/Unity
Christian) took the kick, and sent it to the near post. Freshmen Taylor Ten
Harmsel (Holland/Holland Christian) headed the ball past Waier, netting her
sixth goal of the season. Alma could not muster anything on offense, and
Calvin improved to 9-3-0, 7-2-0 MIAA on the season.

Calvin outshot Alma 19-8 in the contest, as well as 7-5 in the shots on goal
category. Ashton Hearn earned a shutout victory for the Knights.

“We played a really quality team this afternoon, and were able to win at home,”
Calvin head coach Mark Recker said. “The conference is learning that Taylor
[Ten Harmsel] can score in a variety of ways.”

With its win, Calvin gains sole possession of first place in the MIAA. The
Knights return to action Wednesday, October 17, when they host the Olivet
Comets. The game is scheduled to start at 4pm at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.

MEN'S SOCCER

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin men's soccer team stretched its winning streak to eight
games and retained a share of first place in the MIAA standings with a 4-0 win
over Trine University Saturday afternoon.

Senior Joe Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) put Calvin on
the board in the first half, ripping in his team-leading ninth goal of the year
on a feed from freshman Sam Hanover (Saint Johns/Saint Johns HS) in the ninth
minute of play.

Calvin then scored thsophomore Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) scored off a pass from
freshman Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and moments
later, flipped around as Pruis scored on a pass from Vegter. Junior Zakk Rankin
(Fishers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern HS) closed out the scoring with a goal in
the 85th minute with senior Kyle Vela (Grand Rapids/Forest Hils Northern HS)
drawing an assist on the play.

Calvin held a 12-8 shots at goal advantage. Senior Jared Rushlau
(Grandville/Grandville HS) picked up four saves for the Knights in gaining the
shutout victory.

Calvin will travel to Albion next Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match.

HOLLAND, MI – After splitting two matches Friday night at the Midwest
Invitational hosted by Hope College, the Calvin women’s volleyball team bounced
back and swept a pair of matches on Saturday. The Knights first defeated
Dominican 3-1 by scores of 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18 and then topped #17
Wisconsin-Whitewater 19-25, 25-22, 29-27, 25-17.

In the win over Dominican, Calvin was led by senior Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park,
IL/Chicago Christian) with 15 kills. Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago
Christian) added ten kills and sophomore Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka
Penn) had nine of her own. Junior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand
Rapids Christian) dished out 49 assists in the four sets.

The Knights were fueled by the block in their second match against
Wisconsin-Whitewater. Senior Rebecca Ratkov (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) had a
huge game, assisting in seven blocks on top of her four kills. Junior Megan
Rietema had 37 assists and six block assists, while senior Julia Hilbrands
(Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) had five kills and four block assists.
Although Calvin only had 37 kills in the four sets, they scrapped their way to
a come-from-behind win.

“We didn’t play our best volleyball today but we fought really hard and beat
two very good teams,” Calvin head coach Amber Warners said. “We never really
got into a flow throughout the day, but fortunately we battled and got two
important wins.”

The Knights improved to (21-2, 11-0 MIAA) over the weekend. The Knights have
now reached the 20-win plateau 18 consecutive years.

Calvin has a big week of MIAA action ahead of them as its travels to Alma
College on Tuesday night and then face rival Hope College on Saturday
afternoon.
