CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT. 9, 2012

Men's Golf Captures MIAA Regular Season Title;
Women's Soccer Defeats Trine 3-0 - Gains Share of MIAA Lead

MEN'S GOLF

MARSHALL - The Calvin men’s golf team claimed the first MIAA title of the
2012-13 academic year, placing third at the eighth and final MIAA Jamboree of
the year Tuesday afternoon at the Medalist Golf Club with a team score of 324
strokes. Calvin finished five strokes behind second place Hope and 12 strokes
behind first place Adrian but finished 10 strokes ahead of Hope in the final
MIAA overall standings. Calvin held a 15-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's
competition and did what it took to hold on for the win.

The league title is Calvin’s second in the last three years in men’s golf.

Calvin will now host two of the three 18-hole rounds that make up the 54-hole
MIAA Spring Tournament next spring. The spring tournament determines the
league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament in May. Calvin will
be one of four teams teams competing in the tournament along with Hope, Trine
and Adrian.

"We are thrilled to finish as (regular season) league champion," said Calvin
men's golf coach Brian Bolt. "Playing out in front as the league leader creates
pressure but our guys fought through and turned in the scores to get the job
done. The conditions today were not easy. The wind was very brisk and the pin
placements were difficult."

In Tuesday’s round, Calvin was led by junior Jake Hoogstrate with a 79 while
senior Ben Kuiper had an 80, sophomore James VanNoord had an 81, senior Dave
Sarkipato an 84 and junior Ross Ryzenga a 93.

Kuiper was named to the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year while
Sarkipato landed a spot on the All-MIAA second team. Kuiper finished fourth in
the final MIAA individual standings while Sarkipato finished seventh.

"Winning the regular season championship sets us up well for the spring," said
Bolt. "We will play two of the three tournament rounds on our home course and
we are looking forward to the opportunity to do so. We know winning the
tournament will be challenging but we're in the tournament and we'll be eagerly
awaiting the spring season."

ANGOLA, IN – The Calvin College women’s soccer team traveled to Trine
University in search of a second straight conference win. Calvin (8-3-0, 7-2-0
MIAA) defeated Trine (1-10-2, 0-8-1 MIAA) 3-0 Tuesday afternoon.

The Knights put the pressure on the Thunder from the opening kickoff. In the
ninth minute, senior Liz Cancel (St. Clair Shores/Fraser) found the wood work
with a shot. A minute later, fellow senior Francesca Smith (Bloomington,
IN/Bloomington South) had a shot saved by Trine keeper Sloan Davis. Calvin was
not to be denied. In the 12th minute, freshmen Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity
Christian) broke through the Thunder defense on the left side, and sent a cross
into the box. Freshmen Taylor Ten Harmsel (Holland/Holland Christian) shot
from the 6-yeard box into the net, giving Calvin a 1-0 lead.

Despite outshooting Trine 11-3 in the first half, Calvin could not net another
goal.

As the second half began, the Knights’ pressure resumed. Their first six shots
of the half were saved by Davis. The seventh, however, found the back of the
net. Again it was Ten Harmsel, scoring her fifth goal of the season off of a
cross from Smith. Calvin would add another goal in the 87th minute, coming
from junior Danielle Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt), wrapping up Calvin’s 3-0 victory.

Calvin outshot Trine 26-3 in the contest. The Knights also had eight corner
kicks to the Thunder’s two. Calvin junioHuron Northern) earned the victory. Sloan Davis ended the game with a career
high 16 saves.

“We continue to get better as a team on the road,” Calvin head coach Mark
Recker said. “It is encouraging to see our level of play increase with each
game.”

With Alma drawing at Adrian, and Kalamazoo tying Hope, Calvin moved into a tie
for first place in the MIAA with Saint Mary’s.

Calvin returns to action Saturday when it hosts the Alma Scots at noon at
Calvin’s Zuidema Field.
