Volleyball Team Defeats Second-Ranked Wittenberg and 21st-ranked Heidelberg;
Men's Golf Takes First Place at MIAA Jamboree - Moves Into First Place in Overall League Standings
VOLLEYBALL
SPRINGFIELD, OH - The third-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team picked up an impressive 25-20, 26-24, 25-21 victory over second-ranked Wittenberg University Saturday afternoon. The Knights then picked up a 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 victory over 21st-ranked Heidelberg to finish the rugged weekend tournament with a 3-1 record. Calvin's only defeat was a five-set loss to top-ranked Washington University Friday night. (#3) Calvin, (#7) Hope and (#1) Washington University all finished the tournament with 3-1 records while (#2) Wittenberg finished with a 2-2 mark.
In the win over Wittenberg, Calvin (11-1) picked up 16 kills, seven digs and two service aces from senior Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) while junior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had seven kills, 27 assists, four block assists and a career-high 15 digs. Senior Kelly Gordon (Caledonia/South Christian HS) had 15 digs while freshman Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) chipped in with six kills. Sophomore Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn) had five block assists and one solo block while senior Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) contributed four block assists.
Calvin has now won its last three consecutive meetings against Wittenberg at Wittenberg's Pam Evans-Smith Arena.
Against Heidelberg, Calvin received 10 kills apiece from Maggie and Lizzie Kamp. Julia Hilbrands had seven kills, Kelly Gordon 12 digs and Emily Crowe nine kills.
For their efforts, Lizzie Kamp and Megan Rietema were both named to the all-tournament team.
"I was proud of the way our team competed this weekend," said Calvin women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "We are a better team right now than we were before the weekend. The level of competition that we faced was very high and I was pleased with how we responded to that challenge."
Calvin will now break until next Friday when it hosts rival Hope at 6:30 p.m. at Calvin's Van Noord Arena in a meeting of highly-ranked teams.
MEN'S GOLF
ADRIAN - Calvin came up big in the second MIAA Jamboree of the year, firing a first place team score of 295 strokes at the Lenawee Country Club. The first place score vaults the Knights into a tie for first place in the overall team standings with Trine University. Through two league tournaments, Calvin and Trine have totals of 604 strokes 10 strokes ahead of third place Adrian.
The MIAA fall men's golf season consists of eight league tournaments with the top four teams at the conclusion of the fall season advancing to the 54-hole MIAA spring tournament which determines the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament.
Sophomore James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) led Calvin with a score of 72 that allowed him to finish in a three-way tie for first place medalist honors. All five golfers in Calvin's starting lineup fired rounds under 80 as senior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 73, junior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) a 74, senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) a 76 and sophomore Michael Wierenga (Caledonia/South Christian HS) a 78.
Serving as an alternate, junior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 73.
Calvin is back in action next Wednesday when it competes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club.
