Kerr, Whittle and Michmerhuizen Named Capital One Academic All-Americans
CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD
Three members of the Calvin men’s and women’s cross country and track and
field teams have received Division III Capital One Academic All-America honors.
Senior Dan Kerr and junior Greg Whittle have been named to the Capital One
Academic All-America first team on the men’s side while sophomore Nicole
Michmerhuizen has been selected to the Capital One All-America third team on
the women’s side.
All three individuals are receiving Capital One Academic All-America honors
for the first time.
Calvin has now had seven athletes receive Capital One Academic All-America
honors during the 2011-12 academic year.
Other individuals from Calvin to be named Capital One Academic All-America
honors this year include Miles Colago (men's soccer), Lizzie Kamp (volleyball),
Rebecca Kamp (volleyball) and Carissa Verkaik (women's basketball).
Calvin has now had its athletes receive CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades
96 times including 65 times in the last 15 years. Calvin currently ranks
eighth on the all-time NCAA Division III list for Academic All-Americans.
A native of Petoskey and a graduate of Petoskey High School, Kerr is an
exercise science major with the intention of pursing a career in physical
therapy. He carries a 3.75 grade point average and has been a regular member of
the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and the Calvin Dean’s List.
Last week at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, he claimed
All-America honors in the 10,000 meters with a fifth place finish. It marked
the second All-America berth of the academic year for Kerr as he claimed an
All-America plaque ast the 2011 NCAA III Cross Country Championships, placing
21st individually. During the cross country season, Kerr was named the MIAA’s
Most Valuable Player and earned a spot on the All-MIAA team for the third
straight year.
At the MIAA Track and Field Championships earlier this month, Kerr repeated as
league champion in the 10,000 meters and landed a spot on the All-MIAA track
and field team for the second straight year. At the Hillsdale Gina Relays in
late April, Kerr recorded a career-best time of 29:42.36 in the 10,000 meters
which ranks among the top three 10K times in Calvin history.
Whittle meanwhile is from Galesburg, Illinois. He is a graduate of Galesburg
High School. A civial and environmental engineering major, Whittle carries a
3.72 grade point average. He has also been a regular member of the MIAA
Academic Honor Roll and Calvin Dean’s List.
Whittle is a two-time NCAA III track and field All-American, placing second in
the mile run at the 2011 NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships and
fourth in the 1,500 meters at the 2011 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field
Championships. Whittle also qualified in the mile run for the 2012 Indoor
Track and Field Championships this past March as well as the 1,500 meters at
the 2012 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May. Last Saturday,
Whittle reached the finals of the 1,500 meters, placing fourth. In 2011,
Whittle was the MIAA champion in the 1,500 meters and earned a spot on the
All-MIAA team.
He has also made a mark on the cross country course, earning All-MIAA and
Great Lakes All-Region honors this past fall, finishing sixth at the MIAA
Championships and eighth at the Great Lakes Regional Championships.
On the women’s side, Michermhuizen hails from Holland and is a graduate of
Holland Christian High School. She holds a double-major of chemical engineering
and biochemistry while maintaining a grade point average of 3.98.
Michmerhuizen is coming off a stellar track and field season that saw her
capture an MIAA title in the 10,000 meters and an MIAA runner-up berth in the
5,000 meters. For her efforts, she was named to the All-MIAA track and field
team. In addition, she qualified for the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field
Championships in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, placing 19th in the 5K and
20th in the 10K.
During the cross country season, she placed 20th at the MIAA Championships and
38th at the Great Lakes Regional meet while also running in Calvin’s top seven
at the NCAA III Championships.
