Mitch Blankespoor Named Recipient of Renner Associate SID Award
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has
announced the winner of the Renner Associate SID Award. The Renner Award honors
outstanding efforts by student assistants in sports information offices at MIAA
schools.The award is named after longtime sports information director Tom
Renner of Hope College.
A native of Cutlerville, Mich. and a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian
High School, Mitch Blankespoor recently completed his third year as a student
assistant in the Calvin sports information department. Blankespoor is the four
student from Calvin to receive the Renner Award as Annalise VenHuizen was so
honored in 2009, Bruce Van Baren in 2010 and Nate Triezenberg in 2011.
As a student assistant, Blankespoor has been a statistician for soccer,
volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball.
Blankespoor has also served as a student broadcaster for a variety of Calvin
sports. In 2010, he was the lead broadcaster with the Calvin volleyball team as
the Knights captured the NCAA Division III national title. He has also served
as a play-by-play broadcaster for Calvin basketball games on WFUR-FM (102.9) in
Grand Rapids.
He has also assisted with written game day recaps as well as occasional
feature stories for the Calvin sports information office. This past March, he
served as a volunteer assistant at the NCAA Division III women’s basketball
Final Four at Hope College.
An avid bowler, Blankespoor also served as an assistant bowling coach with the
Caledonia High School boys bowling team this past winter. This year, he also
gained the distinction of bowling a 300 game in a local bowling league.
