NCAA III TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY TWO REPORT

CLAREMONT, CA -Calvin College junior Carissa Verkaik made a strong bid for an All-America berth in the women's high jump Friday night at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships but came up just short.

Competing in her second consecutive national track and field meet, Verkaik placed 13th with a leap of 5-4 1/4 on Friday. The Holland Christian High School graduate had three strong attempts at clearing the bar at 5-5 3/4 (1.67 meters) but just clipped the bar on all three attempts. Three of the top eight competitors (All-Americans) were able to clear the bar at 5-5 3/4 and bowed out at that height.

Calvin will now prepare for the final day of competition, slated for Saturday.

Scheduled to compete for Calvin on Saturday are junior Greg Whittle in the men's 1,500 meters, senior Nick Kramer in the men's steeplechase, junior Alyssa Penning in the women's steeplechase, Kramer, senior Dan Kerr and junior Matt Vander Roest in the men's 5,000 meters, senior Jodi Hoekstra and sophomore Nicole Michmerhuizen in the women's 5,000 meters and junior Aaron Meckes in the men's shot put.
