MEN'S TENNIS

The All-MIAA men's tennis teams have been announced and Calvin junior Brian
DeMaagd has been named to the All-MIAA first team while junior Preston Phillips
has been named to the All-MIAA second team.

A native of Grandville and a graduate of Calvin Christian High School, DeMaagd
is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. Earlier this year, he received
MIAA Player of the Week honors once. DeMaagd served as Calvin's No. 1 singles
player this year. In conference play, DeMaagd was 3-3 at No. 1 singles. He was
also part of a No. 2 doubles team that went 6-0 in league play this spring.

Phillips is from Bexley, Ohio. He is a graduate of Bexley High School. Phillips
filled Calvin's No. 2 singles slot throughout much of the 2012 season. He was
4-2 in singles play against league opponents. He was also part of a No. 1
doubles team for the Knights this spring and posted a 5-1 doubles record
against league opponents.

Calvin finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 11-9 and a second
place finish in the MIAA regular season standings with a 5-1 league mark. The
Knights later reached the MIAA Tournament Championship final before falling to
Kalamazoo College 5-1.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Calvin College freshman Megan Visser has been named to the All-MIAA second team
in women's tennis. A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian
High School, Visser filled the No. 1 singles spot for Calvin this spring and
went 3-5 against league opponents.

She also played at No. 1 doubles and went 4-4 against league opponents. Visser
was part of a youthful Calvin women's tennis team that finished 7-13 overall
this spring and in fourth place in the final MIAA regular season standings with
a 4-4 league record. The Knights later qualified for the four-team MIAA
Tournament before bowing to eventual tournament champion Hope.

HOLLAND, MI - The Calvin College baseball team’s season came to an end Saturday
in Holland, MI. The Knights fell in both games of the double-header by scores
of 3-0 and 2-1.
Hope jumped on top in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single by
center fielder Chris Klein who went 4-4 in the game. This proved to be the
game winning run as Calvin could not muster a run on five hits. Senior Scott
Tipton went 2-3 on the day as well as freshmen Ben Wohl. Nate Schepers pitched
five innings while striking out as many batters.

In the second game, Calvin got two runners aboard, but could plate neither.
The game was scoreless through three innings until Hope struck in the bottom of
the fourth inning. Sophomore Chris Blair plated senior Jon Ponte. The Knights
tied the ball game in the top half of the seventh inning when Mike Fuller
singled in Ben Cok.

Hope nearly won the game in the bottom half of the same inning. The Flying
Dutchmen had runners on first and second with one out. Coach Stu Fritz opted
for the sacrifice in attempt to advance the runners. The sacrifice was poorly
done, and Calvin sophomore pitcher Jeff Victor threw out the lead runner at
third. Ben Cok the attempted to throw out the batter, but the throw was lost
in the dirt. Curtis Drozd was waived home. Calvin junior right fielder Tyler
Tos picked up the ball and threw it to first basemen Steve VanderMolen who
relayed it to catcher Kyle Spoelma. Drozd was tagged out at home.

Calvin could not take advantage, however. The Knights stranded a runner at
third in the top of the eighth inning, and Hope plated the game-winning run
walk off style. Jon Ponte scored TJ Klein with a single to right field.

Victor took the loss despite pitching seven and one third innings. Hope won
despite only four hits ; two from Ponte and two from Blair. Calvin totaled six
hitranks as a Calvin single-season record.

The Knights ended up with an overall record of 15-25 (9-19 MIAA). Calvin is
currently tied for sixth place in the MIAA standings. The Knights could end up
in a tie for sixth place in the final league standings or in a tie for seventh
place depending on the outcome of a Sunday doubleheader between Alma and
Albion.
