The Calvin baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with
visiting Alma Monday afternoon at Calvin Field, falling 3-2 in game one
and 8-5 in game two. The Knights now stand alone in eighth place in the
MIAA standings at 5-13.

FIRST GAME

After
leading for much of the first game of Monday’s doubleheader, the
Knights dropped the first of a four game series with Alma in extra
innings.

Calvin got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a
hit-and-run. Ben Cok drove in Grant Van Putten. That lead would hold for
 most of the game.

The Knights had multiple scoring chances from there, but were unable to add to
their lead.

Meanwhile, Nate Schepers was working Alma’s batting order from the
mound. Schepers had command of both his fastball and curveball and could
rely on either for a third strike. The Scots finally got a run off of
Schepers in the fifth inning, squaring the game at one.

The Knights would answer in the bottom of when a Scott Tipton single
scored Tyler Tos. Calvin would carry a 2-1 lead into the top of the
seventh.

But Alma was able to muster another run, forcing the Knights to
regret not capitalizing on their scoring opportunities. The 2-2 tie held
as Calvin was unable to score in the bottom half of the inning.

In the top of the eighth, the Scots brought a run around off a single
to right field. Calvin was unable to equalize in the bottom of the
inning, sealing the game at a final score of 3-2.

Richard Schreiber earned the win for the Scots. Cory Laster took the loss for
the Knights.

The loss drops Calvin to 10-18 overall and 5-12 in the MIAA. Alma advances to
9-18 and 6-11.

SECOND GAME

The Knights hopes to qualify for the conference tournament took a hit
on Monday, dropping the tail end of a twinbill to MIAA foe Alma.

Having lost the first game in disappointing fashion, the Knights
needed a morale boost early. Instead, they surrendered a big inning to
the Scots early in the game. Already in the second inning, Alma
capitalized on a walk and an error to get on the board. A couple of
batters later, Matthew Cresswell knocked a single down the right field
line, scoring Adam Jock. Soon, Jeremy Kamp replaced Jeffrey Victor. The
Scots would score a handful of runs there, ending the inning with seven
runs on the board.

Calvin struggled to get on the board until the fifth inning. Alma had
already put up a run in the top half of the inning, but Calvin was able
to get it back in the bottom frame. Ben Wohl flew out, scoring Tyler
Tos. And Ben Cok took advantage of an Alma throwing error to reach home
from third. The Knights trailed 8-2 at the end of the fifth.

In the next inning, Grant Van Putten singled to left field, scoring
Jake Van Alten. The Knights then scored off a balk. Ben Cok kept things
rolling, doubling to bring Scott Tipton home. Calvin had cut the
deficit to 8-5 by the end of the inning.

But the Knights went down quietly in the Jeffrey Victor took the loss for Calvin, while Anthony Derror got the win for
the Scots.

Calvin is now 10-19 overall and 5-13 in conference. Alma is 10-18 overall and
7-11 in the MIAA.

The two schools will play another doubleheader tomorrow in Grand Rapids at 2
pm.
