Women's Basketball Advances to National Quarterfinals for Third Time In School
History;
Whittle Competes - Does Not Advance in Mile Run at NCAA III Indoor Track and
Field Championships

CHICAGO, IL - For the third time in school history, the Calvin women’s
basketball team is headed to the NCAA III Quarterfinals. The Knights advanced
to the national quarterfinals with a 68-50 victory over second-ranked Chicago
Friday night in a Round of 16 NCAA III Tournament game. Calvin (28-1) will face
St. Thomas (29-1) in a national quarterfinal game Saturday night at 8 p.m.
(EST) at Chicago’s Ratner Center.
Tickets will be available at the door. In its win over Chicago, Calvin led
30-20 at halftime and then built a double-digit lead at 51-40 on a
three-pointer by Jill Thomas with six minutes to go and never looked back.
Calvin was led in scoring by Carissa Verkaik with 20 points while junior Ally
Wolffis had 10 points. Julia Hilbrands had nine points off the bench while
senior Courtney Kurncz had eight points.
Calvin shot 57.1 percent from the field including 50 percent (7-of-14) from
three-point range. Calvin is now 18-13 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
GRINNELL, IA - Calvin College junior Greg Whittle competed in the preliminaries
of the mile run on Friday at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) clocked a time of 4:17.80 but did not
advance to Saturday's finals, finishing 11th in the Friday prelims.
Scheduled to compete for Calvin on Saturday are senior Nick Kramer (Dyer,
IN/Illiana Christian HS) and junior Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron
HS) in the men's 5,000 meters and junior Aaron Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley
Lutheran HS) in the men's shot put.
