Day Two Report from MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships;
Cross Country Teams Receive Academic Honors from USTFCCCA

SWIMMING AND DIVING

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING

HOLLAND – With two days of competition left at the MIAA Swimming and Diving
Championships, the Calvin women’s team is in second place while the Calvin
men’s team is in third place. On the women’s side, Calvin sits two points
behind host Hope as the Knights have 253 points with Hope holding the lead at
255. On the men’s side, Calvin is in third place with 217 points, 19 points
ahead of Olivet and 31 points behind Hope with Kalamazoo in first with 296
points.

In the men’s competition, sophomore Andrew Krafft highlighted the competition
by repeating as MIAA champion on the one-meter diving board, recording a score
of 534.55 after posting a score of 546.10 in the prelims. Krafft was part of
three Calvin divers to score on the men’s one-meter board as freshman Jordan
Kaster was fourth (423.30) and junior Josh Dreska eighth (288.85).

The Calvin men’s team had a strong evening as its 400 medley relay team of
sophomore Andrew Mitchell, senior Greg Gorham, junior Mark Rushlow and senior
Ross Battoclette took second place with an NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time of
3:24.76. The time was also a new school record, breaking the previous mark of
3:24.97 set by Calvin’s 2002 medley relay team.

In the 200 IM, freshman Travis Vincent was third (1:55.85) and junior Stephen
Kraft sixth (1:57.65). Battoclette added a fourth place finish in the 500
freestyle (4:42.06). Calvin’s 200 freestyle relay of Rushlow, Mitchell,
Battoclette and freshman Alex Baumann took fourth in a season-best time of
1:24.93.

On the women’s side, Calvin’s lone win of the evening came in the 200
freestyle relay as its quartet of senior Rachel Bos, junior Stephanie Fox,
junior Rachel Colasurdo and sophomore Margaret Rechel clocked in with a winning
time of 1:38.17.

Calvin’s biggest point production came in the 500 freestyle as freshman
Kathryn Wrobel was third (5:09.34), junior Shelby Cloyd fourth (5:13.27),
freshman Erika Waugh sixth (5:15.88) and junior Elizabeth Counsell seventh
(5:19.37).

In the 200 IM, Fox took second in a time of 2:10.45 with freshman Lexi Scott
third (2:11.51) and junior Savannah VanWormer in seventh (2:17.51).

In the 50 freestyle, junior Rachel Colasurdo was fifth (25.02) and Rachel Bos
seventh (25.15). In the three-meter diving competition, junior Samantha Klaasen
took second with a score of 418.25 points after posting a season-best score of
425.85 in the morning prelims. Freshman Rebecca Mumby was fifth with a score of
349.25.

“Both teams had a solid day,” said Calvin head men’s and women’s swim coach
Dan Gelderloos Thursday night. “The performance by our men’s 400 medley relay
team electrifying and our divers all had a good day. We’ve had a few
ups-and-downs in some of our events but we’re holding strong. We need a strong
final two days and I’m confident that both teams will do just that.”

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

The United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association has named
its 2011 All-Academic recipients in women's cross country and three members of
the Calvin women's cross country team have been so honored. In order to receive
USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, individuals must have compiled a cumulative grade
point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in
the top 35 at the NCAA Regional Championships.
 
Individuals from Calvin that received the honor include senior Kaitlin Diemer
(Caledonia/South Christian HS), junior Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand
Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Alyssa Pram (Cheboygan, MI/Home Schooled)

In addition, the Calvin women's team has also received USTFCCCA All-Academic
Honors with a 3.52 grade point average. The Calvin women's team has received
the award for over 20 consecutive years.
 
At the Great Lakes Regional meet this past November, Penning placed eighth
individually, Diemer was 10th and Oram was 12th. By finishing in the top 35 at
the regional meet, all three Calvin runners earned spots on the Great Lakes
All-Region team.
At the Great Lakes Regional meet, Calvin took first place with a team score of
69 points. At the NCAA III Championships the following week, Calvin took 13th
place with a team score of 399 points.The Knights were led by head coach Brian
Diemer.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

juniors Matt VanderRoest, David VandeBunte and Job Christiansen.

Honors with a 3.45 grade point average.
 At the Great Lakes Regional meet this past November, Christiansen (New
Ipswich, NH/New Ipswich HS) finished 24th, Kerr (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey HS) was
3rd, VanderRoest (Ann Arbor, MI/Ann Arbor Huron HS) fifth, VandeBunte 10th and
Christiansen(New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS) 33rd. In finishing in the
top 35, all four individuals earned spots on the Great Lakes All-Region team.
At the Great Lakes Regional meet, Calvin took first place with a team score of
38 points. At the NCAA III Championships the following week, Calvin took 11th
place with a team score of 352 points.
