Calvin 73, Trine 26

Coming off a win in which it topped the century mark for the first time in 17
years, Calvin was looking for another strong game as it played host to Trine
Saturday afternoon.

The Knights came into the contest with an 18-0 overall record, 10-0 in
conference. Trine was 9-10 overall, 3-7 in the MIAA coming into the game.

The Knights jumped out to an early 8-0 lead on six points by junior Carissa
Verkaik, holding the Thunder scoreless for almost the opening four minutes.

After a Trine jumper by freshman Sicily Boyce, great defense by Calvin held
the Thunder scoreless for the next three minutes while building the Knights
lead to 15-2.

Trine stayed with Calvin over the next few possessions, but then the Knights
took control as a 16-0 run put the game out of reach for the Thunder.

In the first half, Trine seemed unable to hit a shot as it opened up the
contest 2-for-20 from the field.
Meanwhile, it was the three-point shot that gave Calvin a big lead as they
shot 5-for-7 in the opening half. Overall, Calvin shot 62.5% from the field in
the first half.

At the break, Calvin held a commanding 41-9 lead as all 15 players logged
minutes. Junior Kelsey Irwin was 4-for-5 from behind the arc in the opening
half, giving her 12 points at the break. Verkaik also added 12 points at the
half.

Early in the second half, it was once again the Calvin defense setting the
tone as the Thunder didn't score for the first five and a half minutes. During
that time, Calvin extended their lead to 51-9 on a pair of free throws by
Verkaik.

Trine went on a 6-3 run midway through the second half to bring the score to
62-18, but an 11-8 Calvin run finished off the game as the Knights claimed the
73-26 victory.

“I thought we did a nice job defensively, they were without their best player
today, and that made a huge difference,” said Head Coach John Ross. “It kind of
deflated them right away, but it helped that we got off to a good start, we got
some quick scores and dictated the tempo. We knew they were going to come out
and play zone and we did some nice things against them early, and it worked out
pretty well.”

Leading Calvin on offense was Verkaik with 16 points. She also had four blocks
and three rebounds. Irwin added 12 points while junior Julia Hilbrands had 10
points and six boards. The Knights were well-balanced throughout the game as
all but one player put points on the board.

“We need more balance. Carissa has been carrying us, but we need to establish
a second scorer,” said Ross. “If we want to be good, we have to establish a
consistent second scorer, and that’s something we struggle to do. The nice
thing is, we have other people who can score, but we really need a second
scorer if we want to be really good.”

Leading the Thunder in scoring was junior Aleesha Bullock with six. Four Trine
players all added four apiece. Trine shot 7-for-42 in the game, 1-of-9 from
three-point range and 11-for-12 from the free throw line.

The win puts Calvin at 19-0, 11-0 in conference while dropping Trine to 9-11
and 3-8 in the MIAA. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Alma on Wednesday for
a 6 p.m. contest.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
(by sports information student assistant Mark DeHaan)
Adrian 60, Calvin 57

With Adrian in second place in the MIAA at 5-2 and Calvin tied for third at
4-3, the Saturday afternoon contest promised to be hard fought, and that’s
exactly what it was.

From the tip, both teams fought for an advantage, with the tie scored five
times in the first ten minutes.
Adrian then jumped out on a 6-0 run including two fast break layups to build
an 18-12 advantage. A layup by junior Bryan Powell ended the Bulldogs run, but
Adrian would hit a pair of jumpers before settling on a 24-19 halftime lead.

Calvin shot just 13 field goals in the first half, making five. The Knights
stayed in the game on 8-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line, limiting
Adrian to just 0-for-1 from the stripe. Powell led the Knights at halftime with
seven points, while sophomore Tyler Kruis added five.

Early in the second half, Calvin drew to within two points on two occasions,
but could not tie-up the Bulldogs as Adrian would respond each time with a
basket of their own.

With 13:20 remaining, and down 41-33, Calvin went on a 7-0 run, capped by a
one-handed jam by freshman Tyler Dykstra, to bring the score to 41-40.

Five straight points by the Bulldogs expanded the Adrian lead to 46-40 before
a layup by junior David Rietema and a jumper by junior Matt DeBoer brought the
score to 46-44.

With 5:20 left in the game, a Rietema free-throw would draw the Knights to
within one at 52-51. Calvin could not overcome the one point deficit, however,
as Adrian continued to hold the lead.

With 1:47 remaining, a Powell jumper finally tied up the game at 57-57.

After an Adrian free-throw, Calvin had a number of opportunities with under a
minute left but were stopped on a shot-clock violation. A layup by Adrian
junior Delano Collins gave the Bulldogs a 60-57 lead with 13 seconds
remaining.

With the clock winding down, Powell put up a three-point shot that bounced off
the back iron and out, giving the Bulldogs the tight 60-57 victory.

“That was one intense basketball game. I'm really proud of how hard our guys
played,” said Head Coach Kevin Vande Streek. “In a game like this, it’s one
possession. One possession determines whether you win or lose a tightly
contested game, and there’s always “that one.” That one you could have blocked
out, made those two free-throws instead of splitting. It's a hard one to lose
because I thought we invested an awful lot today.”

The Knights were led on offense by DeBoer, who scored 15 points. Powell added
11 while Kruis chipped in nine points and five rebounds. Overall, Calvin shot
53.8% from the field but struggled at the free-throw line, shooting just 63.2%.
Calvin also gave up 13 offensive rebounds to Adrian, giving the Bulldogs a
number of second chance points.

Leading Adrian on offense was sophomore Richaud Pack with 14 points, while
junior Brad Whitby added 13. Collins scored eight and junior Dennis Mason also
chipped in eight points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The loss moves Calvin to 9-10 overall, 4-4 in the MIAA and into a tie for
fourth place with Albion. Adrian is now 13-5 overall and 6-2 in conference,
second in the MIAA.

Calvin's next game will be Wednesday when it heads to Albion for a 6 p.m.
contest against the Britons.
