Mens' Basketball Tripped up by Pirates
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Whitworth 76, Calvin 51
SEATTLE, WA - Calvin opened its trip to northwest Washington with a 76-51 loss to eighth-ranked Whitworth University Thursday night at Mercer Island High School.
Whitworth (9-2) owned the boards in the win, outrebounding Calvin (5-5) 47-32 led by 6-8 center Felix Friedt who scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Friedt had his way in the first half, scoring 12 points and forcing Calvin sophomore center Tyler Kruis to the bench with three fouls while Calvin's backup post Nate Van Eck was also whistled for a pair of first half fouls.
Whitworth led 37-25 at halftime and led by as many as 27 points in the second half to roll to the win.
Dustin McConnell provided a strong compliment to the inside play of Friedt, tossing in 16 points including four three-point shots.
Calvin placed three players in double-digits in scoring led by junior Tom Snikkers with 12 points while juniors Bryan Powell and Matt DeBoer had 10 points apiece with DeBoer stretching his double-figure scoring streak to six games in the process.
Calvin returns to action Friday night when it travels north to Lynden Public High School to take on Whitman College at 10 p.m. (EST).
