Calvin rolled to a 20-point victory over the Trolls from Trinity Christian
College on Saturday afternoon. The victory puts Calvin’s record back above
.500 at 5-4 and drops Trinity to 6-8.
Calvin went on a 10-3 game in the opening four minutes and didn’t look back
from there. The Knights pressured the baseline, with eight of those ten points
coming in within six feet of the basket. Junior Matt DeBoer had the Knights’
first four points, en route to a 16 point performance.
The Knights pulled ahead from there. Midway through the first quarter,
sophomore Tyler Kruis found junior Tom Snikkers cutting, and hit him with a
wrap-around pass, which Snikkers laid in to give Calvin a 24-14 lead Snikkers
led Calvin in scoring with 17 total points and Coach Kevin Vande Streek had
good things to say about his play.
“He had a quiet 17 points, but what really stood out is that he passed so well,”
he said. “It was a very unselfish performance.”
Calvin took a 47-33 lead into halftime, and the Knights held a 22-12 advantage
in points in the paint.
Calvin continued its unselfish play out of the halftime break. Minutes into
the half, Snikkers found DeBoer in the post. DeBoer fed sophomore Mickey
DeVries on a baseline cut, and his lay-up but Calvin on top by 18. Sophomore
Jordan Mast then chipped in three of his 13 points to put the Knights on top by
25. Calvin would extend its lead to 30 twice in the second half. Trinity would
cut the lead to 17 with five minutes remaining, but it didn’t get any closer
than that. The Knights cruised to a 20-point lead.
“I saw 30 minutes of the best basketball we’ve played this year,” said Vande
Streek.
Joining Snikkers, DeBoer and Mast in double digits was junior Bryan Powell with
11 points. Mitch Vallie and Tyler Kruis each had nine. Snikkers led the
Knights with nine rebounds and junior David Rietema had a team high seven
assists.
The Knights return to action on December 29, facing Whitworth College in
Seattle, Washington.
