VOLLEYBALL
ST. LOUIS, MO - Calvin College senior Rebecca Kamp has received the highest honor in Division III volleyball. On Thursday night at the Division III All-America banquet ceremony, Kamp was named the Division III National Player of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
A graduate of Chicago Christian High School, Kamp is the first individual in Calvin women's volleyball history to receive the award.
A native of Orland Park, Illinois, Kamp recently was named a first team All-American for the fourth straight year. She is one of only two individuals in Division III women's volleyball history to receive first team All-America honors four straight years.
A middle-hitter, Kamp concluded her collegiate career this past weekend at an NCAA III regional hosted by Calvin. She is the Calvin career leader in kills (1,868) and total blocks (574). She also holds the Calvin single-season record for hitting percentage (.431) established in 2010.
This fall, she posted a hitting percentage of .401 while averaging 3.85 kills and 1.37 blocks-per-set, ranking among the nation's leaders in all three categories. She was also credited with 31 service aces. Over the course of the season, she was named to all-tournament teams at tournaments hosted by Thomas More and Wittenberg. She was also named to the Great Lakes All-Region tournament this past weekend. She was also named a two-time MIAA Player of the Week during the season and received AVCA Division III National Player of the Week honors once. She was later named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player for the third time in four years and earned a berth on the All-MIAA first team for a fourth straight year. Last week she was named to the Great Lakes All-Region team for the fourth straight year.
"I can't think of an individual more deserving of this award than Becca," said Calvin women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "She has been a huge reason why our program has risen to the level it is at right now. She was not only a dominant player individually, but also the type of player who makes the rest of her teammates better."
Over the course of her four-year career, Kamp helped Calvin fashion an overall won-loss record of 119-17. During that four-year span, Calvin earned four berths in the NCAA III Tournament and in 2010, captured the school's first national title in volleyball with Kamp receiving most outstanding player honors at the national finals in St. Louis.
Kamp was was one of three individuals that received their All-America awards on Thursday night as sophomore Megan Rietema was honored as a first team All-American and Lizzie Kamp as a second team All-American.
