The Knights stayed perfect on the season with a straight set victory of Trine
in Van Noord Arena on Wednesday. The Knights won in three sets by scores of
25-13, 25-13, 25-15.
Calvin started the match with strong serving. Aces from senior Kelly Peterson
and sophomore Megan Rietema in the first set’s early stages to give the Knights
a 13-6 lead. Rietema would follow that up with two more aces on her service
run to extend Calvin’s lead. The Knights also showed flashes of defensive
prowess in the set when senior Kelly Gordon punched a dig to Rietema, who
tipped on the second contact to earn a kill for the Knights. Senior Erin
Vander Plas tipped on set point to take the first set for the Knights.
In the second set, the Knights jumped out to a 7-3 lead and a cutting angle
shot that junior Lizzie Kamp placed inside the 10 foot drew a time out from
Thunder Coach Jamie Wozniack. In the later stages of the set, Rietema and
Rebecca Kamp teamed up on consecutive block assists to take the score to 23-12.
The Knights would take the next two points to clinch the set.
The Thunder didn’t go down without a fight in the match’s final set, but the
Knights front line proved to be too much in the end. Renee De Haan put up a
solo block on a back row attack from Carlynne Searles. Trine would keep
possession alive, but Lizzie Kamp ended the point with an emphatic putdown at
the net. Lizzie Kamp followed that up with two more kills to bring the match
to set point and the Knights took the set 25-15.
Lizzie Kamp led the Knights with 9 kills while Renee De Haan and Rebecca Kamp
each had six. Rietema had 27 assists for the Knights and sophomore Jen
Pluymert and Lizzie Kamp led the way with seven digs. Calvin had six service
aces as a team.
With the victory, the Knights improve to 27-0 on the year and 14-0 in
conference. Calvin next squares off with archrival Hope in Holland on Friday.
