Volleyball Rolls To Win Over Olivet - Featured on NCAA.com Rivalry Site;
Softball Players Honored for Academics
VOLLEYBALL

The top-ranked Knights upheld their perfect record with a sweep of the Olivet
Comets on Friday night. Calvin won by scores of 25-15, 25-9, and 25-14.
The Comets kept things competitive in the first set. Calvin pulled ahead to a
17-12 advantage in the set’s intermediate stages after Rebecca Kamp pounded her
sixth kill of the night. Kamp set the tone for a strong match with six kills
in the first set. Lizzie Kamp echoed her sister with a kill down the line,
which proved to be her attacking spot of choice.
Two points shy of taking the set, the Knights put hands on three consecutive
Comet attack and blocked the third, to set up Calvin with set point. The
Knights took the first set by a score of 25-15.
Calvin came out with fire in the second set. The Knights jumped out to an
early lead and Megan Rietema extended that lead with a lengthy service run to
take the score to 16-3. Kim Start then recorded another ace for the Knights
and Calvin cruised to a 25-9 victory in the second set.
In the third set, Rebecca Kamp started things off with a strong kill up the
middle. She then followed the up with a service ace off the tape. The Knights
would take six points off camps serve. Kelly Peterson then aced the Comet
backline to bring the score 16-8. Lizzie Kamp then swung to the line in the
set’s late stages and Calvin took the third set 25-14.
With the commanding victory, Coach Amber Warners was able to play her entire
roster.
“It was really nice that all the players put in the same amount of work.
Everyone played really well tonight,” she said.
The victory improves Calvin’s record to 24-0 overall and 12-0 in conference.
Senior Rebecca Kamp had 17 kills and a sizzling attack percentage of .654
while sister Lizzie Kamp had 11 kills and an attack percentage of .308. Calvin
had 10 different players notch at least one kill in the match. Sophomore setter
Megan Rietema had 37 assists. Rebecca Kamp also had three service aces. Calvin
will face Alma and Finlandia on Saturday with the Alma match set for 1 p.m. and
the non-conference match with Finlandia set for 4:30 p.m.

The Calvin-Hope volleyball rivalry is cited as one of the top rivalries to
watch during the fall sports season in a feature story put together by the NCAA
website. The rivalry is one of several fall sports rivalries mentioned in the

Four members of the 2011 Calvin College softball team have received NFCA
All-American Scholar-Athlete honors. The four individuals from that Calvin team
to be so honored include Shelby Mast (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS), Heather
Sanderson (Rockford/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Malissa Swinkels
(Beamsville/Smithville District Christian HS) and Rebekah Kline
(Rochester/Oakland Christian HS).
The award is given to any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a
3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2010-11 academic year. This
year’s total of 4,331 honorees bested last year’s total by over 30
student-athletes. The membership category with the most participating
institutions this year was Division III with 168, while high school led the way
in total honorees with 1,160.
The 2011 Calvin softball team was led by head coach Sharon DeKleine.
