The Knights triumphed over opponent and condition with a 2-0 win over
Kalamazoo on Wednesday.
Calvin got on the board early in a cold, wet, and windy day when, in the
game’s second minute, sophomore Zach Willis got free on the left flank and
delivered a cross across the goalmouth to junior Chris Nance, who buried a
volley into the back of the net.
The Knights were then able to settle into a lead, and Calvin set the tone for
the rest of the match with a premium on possession. Calvin owned the ball,
even in Kalamazoo territory. In the 23rd minute, Willis drew a foul inside the
box, earning a penalty kick for the Knights. Once again, it was Nance’s turn
to advance Calvin on the scoreboard. Nance finished the penalty to double
Calvin’s margin and the Knights entered halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
In the second half, the Knights furthered their stranglehold on possession and
limited the Hornets to just three shots. Junior Michael Dolan was also strong
for the Knights between the pipes. Dolan recorded four saves for the Knights.
Between that and strong play in the back, Calvin was able to preserve a 2-0
victory.
“Despite the conditions, we have to come out and get a result,” said Coach
Chris Hughes. “Our offense started with our backline today, and we were
successful,” he added.
With the victory, Calvin is now four points ahead of second place Olivet and
six points ahead of third place Hope and Trine in the conference standings
after Trine dropped a 1-0 decision to Hope on Wednesday.
