Women’s Basketball Ranked Eighth in Preseason Poll – Verkaik Picks Up

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams will open their seasons
on October 22 when both teams compete at the MIAA Relays at the Holland Aquatic
Center. The Calvin sports information office recently sat down with Calvin head
swim coach Dan Gelderloos to talk about the upcoming season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Calvin women’s basketball team has been ranked eighth in the preseason
issue of the Women’s Division III Newsletter. In addition, Calvin junior
Carissa Verkaik has been named a preseason All-American by Women’s DIII News.

A two-time MIAA MVP, Verkaik averaged 19.8 points and 9.5 rebounds a game. A
6-2 center, Verkaik hails from Holland and is a graduate of Holland Christian
High School.

A year ago, Calvin finished 25-5 overall, captured a share of the MIAA regular
season title and claimed the MIAA Tournament crown . The Knights also reached
the second round of the NCAA III Tournament before falling to the University of
Chicago.

The Calvin women’s basketball team is scheduled to open practice for the
upcoming season on Monday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Calvin men’s basketball team has been ranked 18th in the pre-season
edition of the Division III Newsletter. The Knights are one of two MIAA teams
in the Top 25 as Hope is ranked 13th.

In addition, Calvin junior Tom Snikkers has been named a preseason honorable
mention Division III All-American by the Sporting News preseason basketball
edition.

A 6-4 junior forward, Snikkers was named to the All-MIAA first team last year
after averaging 15.6 points and 6.7 rebounds a game.

As a team, Calvin finished 16-12 last year and in second place in the MIAA.

The Calvin men’s basketball team is scheduled to open practice for the
upcoming season tomorrow morning.
